No way am i defending Gerrards record and I would be very surprised if he turns thing around enough to satisfy the villa fans, however a number on here have suggested we go after Graham Potter. I watched some of their games last season and thought they looked good. Potters record for his two seasons st Brighton were not significantly better than Deano and Gerrard and it had taken him three seasons to get to the standard shown on Sunday against man u. So if Potter had been our choice before Bruce and Deano we would probably have shown the same reservations as we are with Stevie G. Whilst our current crop of players are mostly internationals, we are sadly lacking in real quality and perhaps its more the players than the manager, if its both we are in for a long hard season ahead.

Potter hasn't had the budget lije deano and gerreard has thou scottie

{Ed014's Note - I’d have Potter at Arsenal in a heart beat. Class.

Ed agree,he is a top coach, however my point was it took him three years to the point where he would be considered for the next top job,it didn't happen overnight, Brighton have had a couple of bad runs over the last few seasons where fans had questioned him.

{Ed014's Note - no argument from me scot. Personally not sold on Stevie G but he’s learning.

Wasn’t well liked at all as a footballer though.

Scotty, whilst it has taken Potter a number of years to get where he is in premiership terms he did have some pedigree admittedly not in a strong league but he gained a number of promotions and European qualification when managing Osterlund in Sweden I think, so some evidence of ability was already in evidence before he got the Brighton job. The point around the time taken to get to where they are is well made, Gerrard needs time and 2 or 3 windows to make Villa his own team, in essence in spite of his signings this is still ostensibly Dean Smith’s sude. Where I think Potter scores over Gerrard from what we have seen to date is Potter is willing to adapt tactically during games Gerrard seems reluctant to do that and I think that may cost both us and him in the long term.

Ed, lots aren't in the "love gerrard" camp as a manager either mate

{Ed014's Note - no I’m not sure about him at all mate, same as Lampard.

How many people who have played at the very top level have gone on to be top managers?
Realistically I can only think of Guardiola and Zidane immediately and some could argue they've had fairly easy rides.
People like Potter and Smith are the ones to be the next top British coaches. By not playing at a level that had huge off-field responsibilities it allowed them more time to learn the coaching fundamentals and strategies that big name players haven't.
I'd also say looking back at a lot of ex player failures it feels like they expect/demand respect for previous achievements rather than building mutual trust like those who focused on coaching.

Gerard is not bothered about Aston Villa. We are just a step on the ladder for him to try and get his dream job. Anfield.
Our owners have bought into a football legend moving through his career hoping that he develops into a top class manager.
It looks as if he wants to rule the waves and only his opinion counts. Yes, a few players have come to Villa because of Gerard, but a few players, according to rumours, are falling off the wagon as it lumbers along.
Will Gerard last the season? I think that the owners will stick with him to save face regardless of money spent.
Standing on the touch line remind me of an England manager standing in the rain with a brolley.
He will never make AVFC a top 4 club while I am alive and I have a few years left.
