Looks like Gerrard is going to have a go at relegating Al-Ettifaq

Yes, but after the ‘pay off’ he’ll be able to buy his own club to manage!

Emery announced! No complaints here. He's a good coach, big improvement on Gerrard

I see Rúben Amorim has been installed as odds on favourite for the job. I don't know much about him but he has a good record at sporting 70% win rate. Anyone know if we are likely to get him or know anything about his style of play?

Apparently according to reports he likes to play with wing backs and to ‘dominate the ball’ (I love that phrase but what does it mean? I presume it means maximise possession which is all well and good as long as the ball goes forward more often than sideways or backwards) As you say his win rate is good but not in a particularly competitive league but other clubs have showed an interest in him before.

Won the league Cup with Braga and then has won both league and Cup with Sporting.
It screams of de ja vu to me though with his major success being in a 2 horse race, they've not exactly ripped it up in Europe.
On the upside, he's had some level of success at 2 different clubs so it's not the complete fluke that Gerrard was.
My wildcard suggestion Ryan Lowe might not have won major trophies but he's taken struggling, ugly teams and transformed them to challengers playing attacking football in a style I think suits our squad.

Rk, it is a 2 horse race in Portugal but he was not managing either of those horses - porto or benfica. Sporting had not won the title since 01/02

Dont really know much about amorim at sporting to be fair. But hey anything has got to be better than what we had .

Looking at the last few months its clear that Stevie G was a manager and not a coach as the players had no clue on what system they was playing

Hope whoever comes in can jist coach the players and be given time.

I quite like seeing Arne Slot onnthe list .

Got Feyenoord playing good football and previously AZ Alkmaar

I stand half corrected. It's more a 3 horse race. Although Sporting hadn't won it for that long they have had their share of the runner up spot so were already a top team in the league.
I'm not convinced it's that much of a bigger deal than Gerrard winning the title with Rangers but there has to be a reason they paid so much to get him.
My concern is that if he is described as wanting a passing team that makes use of Wing backs, is that really much different to what we have already failed with for the better part of a year? He may do it better but its still something that doesn't fit us.

6.) 21 Oct 2022 21:44:27
We have the wing backs to play the system but it should be a 5-3-2 formation and 1 of the 2 strikers needs to be a 6ft+ target man with the other running off him

7.) 21 Oct 2022 22:16:05
You are right rk. He won it with the 3rd best horse in a three horse race. That's no guarantee he's any good but Gerrard was on the verge of getting sacked at rangers before the covid break saved him, then every other team in Scotland helped him stop a poor celtic from winning the 10 in a row.
I was never optimistic about how far we would get with Gerrard. This guy's cv reads a bit better and at least he's not living off his name. I'd never heard of him before today. I'm just happy to have something to feel excited about

8.) 21 Oct 2022 23:08:15
Each to their own, I'm of the opinion bar a couple of bad years that they've always been in the mix rather than an outright 3rd.
We'll never know how we'll a manager fits the club until they're in, just like with players.
As long as it's not another ex player trying to desperately stay in the limelight then I'll be content to see what they can do.

9.) 22 Oct 2022 02:10:46
portuguese league is not a 3 horse race,boavista are a good side,and braga,and vitoria

10.) 22 Oct 2022 08:50:35
Leicester have the same number of PL trophies as they have Primeira Liga titles between them. They've also been 2nd a total of 5 times between them.
I respectfully disagree that they can be considered genuine contenders and will leave it there.

Can't be much worse than what's gone before him. Has a 70% win rate at Sporting and some silverware

He may not be a "natural" finisher but he is the 5th highest scoring player in the league since he joined us. He's behind only kane, son, salah and haaland in that time so he's not doing too bad. Considering we spent most of that time battling relegation I'd say he is a good striker

I don't think there is anything wrong with Ings' work rate. It's Watkins' pace and power that he's lacking

We should keep him and play him more, especially against teams that defend deep

If our team was full of top 6 players we would probably be in the top 6. What we are looking for is a team that's better than the sum of its parts. Hopefully Emery can achieve this transformation. The right tactics can make average players over achieve and we will need to do this to attract top players
