Bailey due to play, according to his Dad.

Don't know how I feel about that.
We all know what's going to happen.

Dad says I can play football
He'll then get called in for tea.
Takes his ball home with him
Screws it up for the rest of us.

Kienan Davis didn't make the U21s. Must have broken down again. His injury record sure has hampered his chances of anything resembling a career.

So Mings no longer Captain. Is it the beginning of the for him? Or will he respond?

Villa56

1.) 27 Jul 2022 17:46:22
So Mcginn is definitely staying, let's see if it improves Mings game, obviously Gerrard doesn't see him as a regular starter. I don't think Konsa is the answer either,so for me its Chambers or a new signing. Reading below most, like me, don't seem overly optimistic with what we currently have. So most agree that Ings and Watkins don't work and that's obvious to everyone except gerrard, midfield is still a problem. I agree we have sone great youngsters but most aren't ready. So unless we add players and change the style of play from last season its going to look pretty much like last season and most honest fans will realise that.

2.) 27 Jul 2022 18:40:29
Ummm. To me mcginn would not be a automatic starter so to make him captain is a bit strange.

3.) 27 Jul 2022 19:19:25
Will be the making of McGinn making him captain. I don’t get why he’s getting so much stick on here after a few seasons without a proper defensive mid behind him, and a few pre season friendlies which are more about fitness than anything else. Hopefully with Kamara at the club we’ll see the McGinn we expect, I’m going to say 10+ goals from him this season if he doesn’t have to cover as much defensively

4.) 27 Jul 2022 20:17:35
McGinn was always going to be a starter it’s just a question of where. If we get a quality defensive midfielder then I think Gerrard will play 4-2-3-1 and McGinn will play in the middle of the three, which poses an interesting conundrum for the manager in who occupies the remaining two out of Ramsey, Coutinho, Bailey or Buendia. If we don’t sign that quality defensive midfielder then McGinn will play that role I believe and then only one of the above is set to miss out.

5.) 27 Jul 2022 23:07:37
I agree, it’s a bold choice. I assume he understands that leadership involves not trying to hospitalise the opposition, which has seemingly being a pattern of the pre-season. It could have been part of the deal to get him to stay. Personally, on balance, I think it’s the right decision ?

6.) 27 Jul 2022 23:12:48
Have I missed something here or isn’t Kamara the defensive mid that we’ve been lacking and now we need 2 and they’d be starters? I thought we might line up with a midfield 3 of McGinn, Ramsey/Luiz/Sanson or a mother with Kamara deep lying? 1 striker and a 2 picked from Coutihno, Buendia, Bailey, Traore, El Ghazi etc behind the striker? I know some of those might be gone by the end of the window but that’s how I’d imagine we’d line up, 433 ??‍♂️

7.) 28 Jul 2022 11:35:38
I think it'll be 4-3-3 as well Ally - Think McGinn will assume the Ramsey (more attacking role) if we sign a new Number 8 (which I'm still hopeful of doing)!

8.) 28 Jul 2022 14:19:21
OMG formations formations formations. Can we not just go back to a 2-3-5 :)

9.) 28 Jul 2022 20:28:51
I miss proper wingers with 2 up front, big man little man combo

Another win. Another clean sheet. Notable omissions were Marvellous and Freddie. Does this mean they are likely on their way out? I thought Marvellous might be worth a squad place. Not so Freddie though. Seems we have good competition at right wing back.

So Neil Critchley takes over first team training.

I confess to being a bit relieved. This so soon after Michael Beale departure seems like we had a plan. Why did I doubt it? Don't know much about him but it's better than last year when we just seemed completely taken by surprise to lose our first team coaches, and were totally unprepared for the season start.

Villa56

1.) 02 Jun 2022 19:53:44
Stevie G knows him from, guess where Liverpool.
He did a great job at Blackpool, can’t understand why,he would want to take a backwards step .
Onwards&Upwards Villaforever

2.) 03 Jun 2022 22:36:38
Dave, tripling his salary probably influenced his decision mate

31 May 2022 12:42:01
So we are losing Michael Beale by the looks of things. Anyone else worried by this? Last year we lost JT and ROK and look what happened. Ultimately cost DS his job. Why have we not made him an offer he can't refuse? We're spending it for fun everywhere else.

Villa56

1.) 31 May 2022 14:13:36
Different circumstances but this definitely feels like ROK all over again, the managers main man leaving. Hopefully we find the right replacement this time or Gary Mac can step up and have the same effect on players.

2.) 31 May 2022 16:47:46
Sometimes Villa56 it isn’t about money it’s about wanting to be your own man and testing yourself against other coaches. I think it will be interesting to see what the club does because I have read a number of reports which suggest that he is the brains in the outfit, that being the case then we need to be smart in who we recruit to replace him

3.) 31 May 2022 17:01:02
Seeing twitter Alonso is being lined up as number 2

4.) 31 May 2022 18:09:46
Sorry about my ignorance Villdaz but who is Twitter Alonso

5.) 31 May 2022 18:13:35
I think he means people on Twitter are suggesting Xabi Alonso.

6.) 31 May 2022 18:20:10
Number 2's come and go, I've faith he will be replaced and we'll be fine - Onwards and Upwards!

7.) 31 May 2022 18:35:35
Lol AKA Xabi Alonso on some twitter sites being touted

8.) 31 May 2022 19:06:50
Ok Villadaz, at my age I have no interest in twitter and certainly won’t be getting an account.

9.) 31 May 2022 20:03:18
I am not sure that Alonso is a legitimate rumour I think it refers to a quote Gerard made when he was finishing off his playing career and just about to start on his managerial journey when he said his dream number 2 would either be Alonso or Carragher. Given Carragher’s Sky commitments I think some people are putting 2 and 2 together and possibly coming up with 5.

10.) 31 May 2022 21:21:27
That’s what I have read as well Loti.

11.) 31 May 2022 22:36:33
The amount of coaching staff he had I would imagine Gary Mac just steps up as the official number 2 and at most we add another coach.
Number 2s may come and go but their influence can be massively overlooked.
United started slipping after Queroz left even though Fergie managed to keep them competitive. While we had a short term surge under Shakespeare it felt like the steady foundations ROK and Terry provided were eroding beneath the surface.

It's his agent trying to engineer a move. Never been any substance to those rumours.

£40 million, I think, will seal the deal. Whenever the quotes come from overseas sources it seems to have a bit more legs. I think it is looking likely.

Maybe Mings is off to Newcastle?

There is a question mark over his character as well. I'm not too disappointed that we seem to have moved on. He would have cost a lot too. It's all money we can't spend elsewhere with FFP.

I've watched every preseason game and I think the team had wants to start with has let him down every time. The subs have come on and rescued it. Having stated he wants two quality players in every position, and he is close to that, and to fight for places, then he has to drop players that don't perform. But he isn't doing it so there's a sniff of teacher's pet going on. If he hasn't already, he is on the verge of losing the dressing room. Very hard to come back from that.

I agree about McGinn. Not doing it as captain. But who else could?

I feel this game was pivotal. He kept saying we needed a preseason. Now we have had one and nothing has changed. Plenty of possession but no idea what to do with it. Coutinho needs a break from the pressure and fight for his place. It could all go sour quite quickly, imho.
