The case for Bruce is quickly diminishing. He is a decent man but plays a brand of football that is turgid and devoid of risk. His management in the Play Off Final and his failure to react to the sending off was woeful. Even if he gets Villa promoted he will never be able to develop the side in terms of style or improving players. Dean Smith is an obvious replacement. Brentford have a superb scouting system and he has developed players. Time for a change.

This season has demonstrated that a lot of the current squad are not good enough to take us to the next level. I am really hoping that we start next season with two new midfielders, two centre backs, a winger and centre forward. I wouldn’t be that sad to see the back of any of the players signed in the Bruce and Smith eras with the exception of Cash, Konsa and Martinez. Watkins and McGinn are the uncertainties for me. As Watkins demonstrated against City; he often lacks the touch and composure of a too striker. As for McGinn he is clearly not suited to the role he has played most this season. He is a fan favourite but needs to be given a chance higher up the pitch.

I loved Mings tonight. No nonsense defending. Can we please have that every week! When he keeps it simple he is outstanding. Marvellous has to have a run now. He is more disciplined and a much better partner for McGinn. The Luiz and McGinn pairing doesn’t quite work. I thought it was scandalous how Anwar was dropped for Barkley. He showed that again tonight. Smith pick on form and not on reputation.

I think it is important that we are not too negative when we look at the progress we have made this season. My overriding concern is our over reliance on Jack and where we would be without him. It feels like 95% of our goals are created or scored by him. Even today when the Hammers did a very good number on him, he still popped up with an assist. We all know in our hearts he is irreplaceable but the creative contributions of the Midfield are not good enough. I hope Sanson can provide the drive we have been lacking from the middle of the pitch. I also wouldn’t be looking to spend 30 million on Barkley. I hope to see a reaction and Smith making a few changes in the midfield area on Saturday.

I think the nature of this relegation means we need to change the manager. Even when we have good spells in games; we never convert anything and know that as soon as we go behind the game is over. There is no way Grealish is going to demand an 80 million transfer fee. However, we shouldn’t blame him for our troubles because without him we would have had 15 points. It was painful watching McGinn tonight, He is clearly not fit yet but the lack of alternatives means he has inevitably been over-played.
