Anybody listen to The Villa View podcast? On the most recent one, Dan Bardell (who I believe does have connections within the club?) suggested that we are targeting ambitious signings at Number 8 and Striker? Better than what we currently have was the message - If true we could have a strong end to the window? Obviously no guarantee and the club won't sign players for the sake of it if we don't get the signings we want but that did sound positive. I wouldn't be surprised if we are targeting Gallagher and Richarlison, not saying we would get either but if say they fall under the ambitious umbrella?

Danny Ings :-) Now let's keep spending boys! going to be a fun few weeks!

1.) 04 Aug 2021 18:52:17
That is one out of nowhere. No rumours, no pundit quoting “I’ve heard”, no “in the know”. Just straight in. Like a deadline day signing weeks before the deadline. Great signing.

2.) 04 Aug 2021 19:00:53
Now for Lingard and Martial.

3.) 04 Aug 2021 19:15:36
Best thing about it Trinity, no one had a clue! So professional from the top down now at Villa!

4.) 04 Aug 2021 19:19:39
I have literally in the past 10 mins been told that Axel is on his way deffo, but accompanied by Daniel James, Axel loan, James bought, personally I think he’s a headless chicken so I hope my mate’s full of it lol 😂

{Ed014's Note - Dan James from United is absolute pony so I’m hoping they keep him and it’s not true!

5.) 04 Aug 2021 19:39:21
Chris, you’re spot on. A signing like they use to be. No leak, no fuss, just done. Great to see Sky and Talksport taken completely by surprise.
£30m? A bit steep or about right?

6.) 04 Aug 2021 19:59:07
I’ve heard it’s 25 with 5 in add ons, so if it gets to 30 he will have done something significant to get the price to 30. I’d say it’s a good deal for both sides, we get the best goal scorer outside the top 6, they get decent money for a player they could potentially lose for free if he dug his heels in.

7.) 04 Aug 2021 20:30:02
I wondered where he would end up going, great buy, good luck in the new season.

8.) 04 Aug 2021 19:37:46
My thoughts too Ed, same guy told me Curtis Jones a few days ago too, not keen on that 1 either

{Ed014's Note - Curtis Jones from Liverpool? I’d be surprised if they let him go.

9.) 06 Aug 2021 18:14:42
Curtis Jones is a good shout. However, unless the scousers want the cash for their own target, I agree that he could be out of reach.

Fulham’s Zambo Anguissa’s name has cropped up again. I saw a report the club are reluctant to lose him, but have a £20M target in mind if forced to consider a release. Roma are also interested (also linked to El Ghazi) .

Now we have most of our additions, I wonder if there will be a few departures (e. g. AEG, Hourihane and big Wes)?

10.) 06 Aug 2021 23:09:07
I am sure Smith and Lange are taking stock with how the squad is shaping up. You can be forgiven for applauding every new offensive player that may fill the void left by the floppy haired one. However, how our we stacking up in terms of team balance?

If we opt to accommodate Buendia, Bailey, Watkins and Ings, how do we field sufficient strength behind them? Is a combination of two from McGinn, Luiz, Sanson and Nakamba going to cut the mustard? If not, what can we do to address this? A tricky one.

11.) 07 Aug 2021 07:01:13
AJ those players mentioned, with the exception of Bailey who's an unknown quantity, have one thing in common-workrate. As seems to be the new mantra- defend from the front. I think we'll be fine. We all know McGinn doesn't stop running and Nakamba can provide the defensive shield. Luiz can do the job too plus Sansom, when fit has similar attributes as McGinn. I believe Beundia will be the link between midfield and attack but with so many useful options up front I feel we'll retain the ball a lot better this season. Only time will tell and it may take a while for it all to come together but I'm optimistic for the season ahead.

12.) 07 Aug 2021 08:25:36
I agree with you, Moose, in regard to Buendia’s likely role. The Nakamba/ McGinn combination fits the high energy philosophy better than one including Luiz, who has been disappointing, despite a promising start. Both Sanson and, I agree, Bailey are difficult performers to judge, at least at this stage. The latter looks to be the maverick in the pack potentially.

It wouldn’t be beyond the realms of Smith to plan to play something along the lines of a 4-2-1-3 with Buendia playing behind Watkins, Ings and Bailey. Perhaps not always the set up in the tougher games, but still as a frequent arrangement.

13.) 07 Aug 2021 10:26:14
I'm hoping that those front 4 will be extremely interchangeable and offer us more flexibility with formations and also keep the opposition guessing.

14.) 07 Aug 2021 21:27:50
I agree. Going to be a fluid front 3/ 4 with an exciting array of options to choose from.

We still need to replace Engels (probably going to be Axel returning), and I think we could do with a higher quality back up keeper than Jed.

Then we need something in midfield. A more complete defensive midfielder than Nakamba. Anguissa would be great (his performance metrics last season were superb), and maybe even be a better option than the more expensive Bissouma (odds on him coming have shortened dramatically) .

I think we still need a naturally left sided attacker too. To upgrade on Anwar. For me, he’s pretty much at his ceiling, and his game would be better suited to a slower paced league where he’s afforded more time and space. He’d do bits for Roma, if that move pans out. Cantwell seems less likely now, but he’d be a good option. or I’d definitely take Damsgaard.

22 Jun 2021 23:44:20
I see John Percy has stated we are going back in for Smith-Rowe - I know it's not going to happen but for a second can we imagine this front 4 at Villa next season, wow!

Buendia, Smith-Rowe, Grealish

01 Jan 2021 22:23:39
Never a peno for me, so soft. We need to invest in a striker in January, Watkins looks tired and needs a rest (he's be unbelievable so far this season to be fair) .

17 Aug 2020 16:48:06
Oh great, talk of City wanting Luiz back :- (.

14 Jun 2022 09:22:50
Bissoma off to Spurs - Disappointing, I felt he was a banker given our bid for him in January! Hopefully we have another target in mind.

1.) 14 Jun 2022 14:02:19
It’s a shame because him and Kamara in the middle of the park would have been a definite improvement on what we have currently and as much as Gerrard is a draw for players so unfortunately is Conte and with the prospect of Champions League football on offer even if we better Spurs offer I think we would be onto a loser.

2.) 14 Jun 2022 14:13:01
Where are spurs going to play all these midfielders

3.) 14 Jun 2022 18:05:27
They don’t have to play them all Whacky.Top six are buying up the players to stifle the competition and make it a closed shop.
The London clubs have an advantage over us because these players want to be in the capital.

4.) 14 Jun 2022 18:25:57
Whack, it’s all about building a squad particularly if you want to compete on all fronts and a serial winner like Conte will want to do just that he won’t be happy playing second fiddle to Klopp and Guardiola

05 Jun 2022 09:05:39
So do you we think will be coming in between now and end of the season? Personally I think we'll see one more addition to the starting 11, then back up at LB and Striker. If we can get that done early it's been a great window. Bissoma the obvious addition in midfield.

Cash, Carlos, Mings, Digne

Bissoma, Kamara, McGinn

Buendia, Watkins, Coutinho

That's a string starting 11 :-)

1.) 05 Jun 2022 18:21:16
That is a strong starting XI BK however even if we spend £30 million on Bissouma I think the money we raise from those leaving will at least equate to if not exceed what we pay in transfer fees giving us the opportunity to spend really big on a quality striker.

2.) 05 Jun 2022 21:39:13
I’m thinking if we wanted Bissouma he’d be signed by now ??‍♂️

3.) 05 Jun 2022 21:51:25
Hope you're right mate, I'd love a clinical forward, fingers crossed!

4.) 05 Jun 2022 23:31:03
I think we definitely want another midfielder Alley. Bissoma will have options so no guarantee obviously but I'd be very surprised if we aren't still in the mix for him. It's all gone a bit quiet, usually a good thing with this Villa setup, imagine it'll step up a gear once Gerrard is back from holidays and the transfer window opens formally.

5.) 06 Jun 2022 20:19:06
You’re probably right BK, just a thought, if we’re after Hickey/Bassey and they want £25M for them and they’ll only be cover for left back, might as well keep Targett, if I remember right he signed a contract extension season before last ??‍♂️

6.) 06 Jun 2022 22:32:05
Ramsey over mcguin konsa over mings

02 Jun 2022 16:59:19
Neil Critchley replaces Michael Beale, can we all relax now :-)

1.) 02 Jun 2022 17:09:57
Is this announced or rumours

2.) 02 Jun 2022 17:12:02
BK,Do you know anything about Neil Critchley? IMHO First team coach is *the* most important role at a football club. How often do you wonder why a team packed full of talent under-performs or conversely a team punches above their weight? It has to be the tactics, motivation and training. Granted you need quality start with, but there is more to it than that.

3.) 02 Jun 2022 17:24:44
Very good coach Villa56, I'm delighted with this appointment - We need to trust the club, under the current owners I don't recall them letting us down too often :-)

4.) 02 Jun 2022 17:58:25
The jury is out, but I am heartened that you know a bit about him, and encouraged that at least we seemed to have a plan.

5.) 02 Jun 2022 18:11:17
Big man, definitely real as announced on AVFC site.

6.) 02 Jun 2022 18:16:29
Agreed BK. Most of us knew absolutely zero about Beale before he came here, many spent most of the back end of the season criticising the team performance only to then have a meltdown that one of the main coaches has left.
The club are acting in an admirable, professional and measured way and I'm sure they've done their homework on this one too.

7.) 02 Jun 2022 18:20:11
Villa56 Neil Critchley has a UEFA Elite level badge. One of only 16 coaches world wide that have that badge.

8.) 02 Jun 2022 18:51:14
Just stepped down from managing Blackpool and they've just had a pretty tidy season. As long as he's not waiting for another managerial role then it's a bit of a coup.

23 May 2022 09:17:00
Kamara done, what a signing that is - Going to be a big summer, buckle down lads!

1.) 23 May 2022 09:54:14
Kamara a quality midfielder one we would not have landed if Gerrard wasn’t in charge, the other good thing is we are starting to get our business done early which can only be a good thing. It will be interesting to see if we look to sign another quality defensively minded midfielder if so that would suggest we are going to go with one up top.

2.) 23 May 2022 10:08:32
Great news and brilliant to get it done early, Steve has a lot to prove this year but he’s going about business in the right manner.

3.) 23 May 2022 11:23:31
Two top signings already and the season literally finished yesterday! This is already one of the best windows we’ve had and it’s not even officially began!
It’s such a breath of fresh air to see us have a plan and act it out after years and years of waiting until the end of the window and taking what’s left!

Onwards and upwards UTV

4.) 23 May 2022 11:51:25
Think we'll sign Tarkowski, Bissoma, Bassey and a striker. And if we do, that'll be an incredible window!

Cash, Tarkowski, Mings, Digne

Bissoma, Kamara, McGinn

Buendia, XXXXX, Coutinho

That would be an incredible 11 and doesn't include players like Bailey, Watkins, Ings, Ramsey etc :-)

Who do people think will be the striker? Don't know why, and not saying he would be good or that he would even come, but I think we might look at Firmino. Probably just looking at the Liverpool / Brazil connections and putting 2+2 together to get 11 :-)

5.) 23 May 2022 18:56:04
I’ve been saying Kamara, Tarkowski and Origi on frees and i'd be happy with that, gives us more flex to buy a (nother) marquee signing, we know who needs to go and it wouldn’t surprise me now if Luiz signs a new deal too, if he’s been guaranteed to be pushed further forward. Origi would give us something different to what we have, if I was to pick that marquee signing, it’d be Jonathan David

6.) 23 May 2022 22:20:58
Origi is going to AC Milan

7.) 23 May 2022 23:24:14
I think the marquee signing will be in midfield, I don't see us getting Phillips but by all accounts he is our main target - Could we make an offer too good to turn down perhaps? Think the striker will be Suarez, not the signing I'd like to see but makes sense I guess, would probably come in as second choice striker and give us a year to fix other issues in the squad. A summer of Coutinho, Kamara, Tarkowski, Phillips, Suarez and Bassey would be pretty spectacular to be fair. This 11 (albeit highly ambitious, and unlikely) would certainly cause a lot of teams issues next season.

Cash, Tarkowski, Mings, Digne

Kamara, Phillips, McGinn

Buendia, Watkins, Coutinho

8.) 24 May 2022 00:05:30
Bk, it certainly could be promising mate, however to put it in to perspective, 8 on your list didn't exactly set things alight this year.

9.) 24 May 2022 05:12:51
AC Milan are the front runners for the signature of Origi, like Man Utd were for Kamara, just sayin’ ??‍♂️

10.) 24 May 2022 05:17:03
Oh really? Who would you say didn't set things alight Caffu? I get your point, McGinn for example wasn't at his best but I think Kamara and a Bissoma / Phillips would free him up to be more effective further up the pitch, you also have Ramsey in a similar position who could easily slot in there. I think that would be a very well balanced side, which for me was a massive issue this season and add the fact we would have a bench that includes the likes of Ings, Suarez, Bailey, Ramsey, Chukwuemeka (if he signs), Luiz (potentially), Chambers, Konsa, Nakamba, Massey etc - All of a sudden our squad depth becomes pretty impressive and more importantly balanced with options in all positions. For me I'm writing off this season, the squad was a mess and it was always going to be the case that some players under performed, I think we can already see how Gerrard is addressing the imbalance which will 100% improve team performances, I'm convinced.

11.) 24 May 2022 06:59:12
What BK said ⬆️

12.) 24 May 2022 07:38:13
I know we have been linked with Tarkowski but again I am not sure he really fits the bill for me, he is a bit one paced and we have been caught out a few times when opponents turn the ball over and hit us on the break I don’t think he will help address that problem although in fairness Burnley despite being relegated haven’t conceded that many and our defensive midfielders might help sort that out. In terms of a marquee signing I am hoping it’s a forward so I have said many times for me it would be Schick at Leverkusen but if not, and as Roma are interested in Luiz how about offering him as part of an exchange deal to bring Tammy back?

13.) 24 May 2022 08:25:16
I agree Ings, I don't think Tarkowski is a sexy signing, I'd much prefer a ball playing CB but Leicester were willing to pay 40M for him in the not to distant past so there must be something there - I think he'll be a step up defensively on Konsa and Chambers but agree he's probably not exactly what we need to really push on. I see him as a Craig Dawson to West Ham type of signing, very solid defensively and good in both boxes, for now that'll do me as the priority this summer is Midfield, if we need to get Tarkowski in on a free and that allows us to sign Phillips / Bissoma then I'm all for it. Also, would absolutely love Schick or Tammy as well :-)

03 May 2022 08:26:17
Looking more and more likely that Carney Chukwuemeka won't be signing a new contract - Disappointing given the fact he's clearly a very talented player but if he backs himself to get more first team football (and let's be honest money) elsewhere then off you go Carney - Best of luck to you.

1.) 03 May 2022 11:44:18
Bk, it appears to me that Gerrard is showing his strength and determination and sending a message to anyone who isn't committed to cause. Carney looks good but perhaps not as good as he thinks, either way his future is not with us by the look of it.

2.) 03 May 2022 14:05:22
I agree Carney’s future looks like it’s elsewhere unfortunately, however I do think letting him ply his trade at another club will come back to bite us in the ass. It wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t end up somewhere like Dortmund to replace Bellingham who will be sold on for big money as per the Dortmund business model.

3.) 03 May 2022 23:16:31
I think Bellingham is a freak though Ings, a generational talent - Carney may turn out to be an exceptional player but for every Bellingham there are 100 talented players who chase fame and fortune and don't live up to the expectation. I hope Carney goes on to have an amazing career but I won't lose sleep over him leaving.

4.) 04 May 2022 07:58:02
BK I agree with your point re Bellingham he is an exceptional talent that you don’t see that often, my concern is we have this fantastic academy attracting some of the top talent UK wide and beyond but if we are not careful we end up developing talent for the benefit of other clubs and not our own. I am not sure what is the point of recruiting lots of talented kids and yet spending millions on established talent who effectively block that young talent from the first team squad. So for example what is the point of having the likes of Young whose best days are behind him and Hause who let’s be honest is never going to be an established premiership player on the bench above the likes of Chrisene or Chukwuemeka? If we are taking that approach then let’s not bother in recruiting all these kids. I fully accept it’s a balancing act between success now and success in the future I just don’t think we have the balance right at the moment.

5.) 04 May 2022 09:32:03
That's a very good point Ings, it's certainly unfortunate that the first "star" (or potential star) we have produced from our revamped and very strong academy may be going elsewhere but I think it's fair for the club to expect commitment from these players, especially at 18. Carney, for example, could sign a 5 year deal with Villa now and get a massive move to a European giant before the age of 23 if he's as good as some expect.

I'm not worried about our academy in general, there is a clear line of sight to the first team if they deliver in training, both Carney and Iroegbunam have proven that this season and Jacob Ramsey is a mainstay in our first 11 after breaking into the team last season. It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer, I wouldn't like the club to give unto ridiculous wage demands of 18 year olds, I think that sets a bad precedent, so if Carney leaves he leaves and I wish him well.

6.) 04 May 2022 09:46:59
I think everyone is overreacting to be honest, it’s only 1 player who hasn’t even proved himself yet, hardly a reason to scrap our academy, every club lose an odd player and most lose several in similar circumstances, look at all the young players we have recruited, what’s gerrard meant to do.? We had 2 young players starting on Saturday against the worst team in the league and although Tim had a decent game we were better when Doug came on he settled things down, Doug has his critics all season including myself but he’s still better than these kids, a good manager plays his best team, the younger guys will get their chance when they are good enough. jack grealish wasn’t bigger than Aston Villa so chuck sure as hell ain’t so if he’s not happy just get rid we don’t need his attitude.

7.) 04 May 2022 15:47:36
Whack, I don’t think it’s an overreaction if Carney goes he goes the club moves on, however it’s about trying to understand the thinking behind some of the decision the club is making. For example I just don’t understand the approach the club has taken with Carney particularly when a lot of knowledgeable football people are saying that not only is he the best in his position for his age in the UK but possibly in Europe. If the competition at Villa is too hot in the middle of the park at the minute then why not take the approach they have taken with Archer and loan him out? At least that way you can assess him playing what I would describe as ‘mans’ football rather than U23’s all the time. If in the end it’s all about money then I think the club is right to take a stand and not to be held to ransom but if I am honest when we have virtually 2 seasoned professionals for most positions then I don’t see why more of the youngsters aren’t out on loan.

8.) 04 May 2022 16:32:16
Ings, I'd imagine the club expected to be closer to an agreement with Carney then they are and if that was the case I'm sure he would have a lot more games and starts under his belt. I think this one is just a mess, probably driven by money, and hopefully not consistent with what will happen going forward. The fact both Ramsey and Iroegbunam have commited to long term deals, as well as, a lot of your talented players out on loan gives me a lot of comfort that the academy is moving in the right direction. And who knows, we might see a breakthrough in the summer with Carney and we could be worried about nothing :-)

9.) 04 May 2022 21:35:33
If he's that good then he'd play. Think he believes his own hype. Pogba Mark 2

10.) 04 May 2022 22:32:14
Camavinga showing tonight what a truly talented teenage player is! Wow!

11.) 04 May 2022 22:41:30
You mean like De Bruyne and Salah at Chelsea?

12.) 05 May 2022 10:52:55
Salah really only sparked into life at Liverpool, didn't do much at Roma. Chelsea signed him from Basel. De Bruyne wanted to leave because Jose didn't play him and he thought he should be. And Chelsea got £18m for a relatively untested player. It's not like Chuck is trying to get in a midfield ahead of a Lampard though is it? Did he have much of an impact in the games he did play?

13.) 05 May 2022 16:12:07
I’ve not much of CC play outside of his chances with the first team, but I can’t say of those appearances made me think “oh wow” what a star. Where as I thought that after last weeks game seeming Tim for the first time properly? Whether it’s his lack of intent, his attitude or a lack of effort on behalf of the club, there’s clearly something wrong.

Whilst the examples given above are the one end of the scale when it comes to letting talent go, there’s also the other end where players are hyped to the hilt and then do zero with their careers.

I can remember people and pundits alike going crazy about macheda when he scored that wonder girl against us. what’s he done since?

14.) 05 May 2022 18:31:12
Bucktooth, Salah scored 29 goals in 65 Seria A games together with 17 assists that’s a pretty good return I don’t think that constitutes not doing much.

Both very good players Ings, would have loved them at Villa but sadly the lure of Champions League will always win out - I'm sure Villa have other targets and will no move through the list, if we were genuinely in for Philips (which apparently we were) then we must have a big budget allocated for another Midfielder. Hopefully it's Sangare, he looks a real player from what I've seen of him - Gallagher as well, would be a very good addition. Fingers crossed we see some movement soon, pre season is upon us and before we know it it'll be our first fixture at Bournemouth. Still so many things that need to be addressed like Luiz and Carney staying, Sanson loan, a new LB, MF and forward. Going to be a buy few weeks!

I think we are looking at Gallagher Ings, that's who I think we are targeting at No8.Or Sangare as Kamara can play 6 or 8 and Gerrard did want more physicality in the middle.

I'm with you AJ, for me if we want to go to the next level we need to improve on El Ghazi and Trez.

The question we need to ask AJ is, are Villa better with Watkins and Tammy or Watkins and Wesley? For me the answer is obvious, I'm all for bringing Tammy back, he instantly improves our options up front and adds much needed competition for places. I would love Damsgaard as well, he looks a very adequate replacement for Jack :-)

Think we need to be patient, we haven't even kicked a ball pre-season yet - We'll get the LB, No.8 and forward we need before the season starts.

I'd be absolutely amazed if Soucek was available but if he is then Villa need to be all over it - Similar to Digne, if there is a chance we need to act, we surely can pay him what he wants and he'd add much needed physicality to our Midfield.

I think Ramsey (and Villa) needs competition in midfield - It won't benefit either party if Ramsey is a guaranteed starter, he has huge potential but if Villa have an opportunity to bring in a ready made Number 8 then they have to take it. Luiz will go in my opinion, as will Sanson on loan so that leaves us very short in midfield - I personally think we'll bring in a big name in midfield, striker may be more difficult as every club seems to be after a striker this summer and we know Villa won't spend for the sake of it. I don't think it'll happen personally but if Villa could attract a Tielemans then we would have a great shout of Europe next season.

Would be incredibly ambitious but apparently we are looking at ambitious targets for Number 8 and Striker. He fits the bill but my gut says we are after Gallagher and Richarlison, zero idea why LOL.

I think Archer will be given a full season in the Championship, just a gut feeling - Villa will bring in another forward and loan Archer to a top end Championship club, he'll bag 20+ goals next season and he'll be around the first team from then on - Reminds me of Defoe in his movement, looks a real fox in the box.
