Danny Ings :-) Now let's keep spending boys! going to be a fun few weeks!

1.) 04 Aug 2021 18:52:17
That is one out of nowhere. No rumours, no pundit quoting “I’ve heard”, no “in the know”. Just straight in. Like a deadline day signing weeks before the deadline. Great signing.

2.) 04 Aug 2021 19:00:53
Now for Lingard and Martial.

3.) 04 Aug 2021 19:15:36
Best thing about it Trinity, no one had a clue! So professional from the top down now at Villa!

4.) 04 Aug 2021 19:19:39
I have literally in the past 10 mins been told that Axel is on his way deffo, but accompanied by Daniel James, Axel loan, James bought, personally I think he’s a headless chicken so I hope my mate’s full of it lol 😂

{Ed014's Note - Dan James from United is absolute pony so I’m hoping they keep him and it’s not true!

5.) 04 Aug 2021 19:39:21
Chris, you’re spot on. A signing like they use to be. No leak, no fuss, just done. Great to see Sky and Talksport taken completely by surprise.
£30m? A bit steep or about right?

6.) 04 Aug 2021 19:59:07
I’ve heard it’s 25 with 5 in add ons, so if it gets to 30 he will have done something significant to get the price to 30. I’d say it’s a good deal for both sides, we get the best goal scorer outside the top 6, they get decent money for a player they could potentially lose for free if he dug his heels in.

7.) 04 Aug 2021 20:30:02
I wondered where he would end up going, great buy, good luck in the new season.

8.) 04 Aug 2021 19:37:46
My thoughts too Ed, same guy told me Curtis Jones a few days ago too, not keen on that 1 either

{Ed014's Note - Curtis Jones from Liverpool? I’d be surprised if they let him go.

9.) 06 Aug 2021 18:14:42
Curtis Jones is a good shout. However, unless the scousers want the cash for their own target, I agree that he could be out of reach.

Fulham’s Zambo Anguissa’s name has cropped up again. I saw a report the club are reluctant to lose him, but have a £20M target in mind if forced to consider a release. Roma are also interested (also linked to El Ghazi) .

Now we have most of our additions, I wonder if there will be a few departures (e. g. AEG, Hourihane and big Wes)?

10.) 06 Aug 2021 23:09:07
I am sure Smith and Lange are taking stock with how the squad is shaping up. You can be forgiven for applauding every new offensive player that may fill the void left by the floppy haired one. However, how our we stacking up in terms of team balance?

If we opt to accommodate Buendia, Bailey, Watkins and Ings, how do we field sufficient strength behind them? Is a combination of two from McGinn, Luiz, Sanson and Nakamba going to cut the mustard? If not, what can we do to address this? A tricky one.

11.) 07 Aug 2021 07:01:13
AJ those players mentioned, with the exception of Bailey who's an unknown quantity, have one thing in common-workrate. As seems to be the new mantra- defend from the front. I think we'll be fine. We all know McGinn doesn't stop running and Nakamba can provide the defensive shield. Luiz can do the job too plus Sansom, when fit has similar attributes as McGinn. I believe Beundia will be the link between midfield and attack but with so many useful options up front I feel we'll retain the ball a lot better this season. Only time will tell and it may take a while for it all to come together but I'm optimistic for the season ahead.

12.) 07 Aug 2021 08:25:36
I agree with you, Moose, in regard to Buendia’s likely role. The Nakamba/ McGinn combination fits the high energy philosophy better than one including Luiz, who has been disappointing, despite a promising start. Both Sanson and, I agree, Bailey are difficult performers to judge, at least at this stage. The latter looks to be the maverick in the pack potentially.

It wouldn’t be beyond the realms of Smith to plan to play something along the lines of a 4-2-1-3 with Buendia playing behind Watkins, Ings and Bailey. Perhaps not always the set up in the tougher games, but still as a frequent arrangement.

13.) 07 Aug 2021 10:26:14
I'm hoping that those front 4 will be extremely interchangeable and offer us more flexibility with formations and also keep the opposition guessing.

14.) 07 Aug 2021 21:27:50
I agree. Going to be a fluid front 3/ 4 with an exciting array of options to choose from.

We still need to replace Engels (probably going to be Axel returning), and I think we could do with a higher quality back up keeper than Jed.

Then we need something in midfield. A more complete defensive midfielder than Nakamba. Anguissa would be great (his performance metrics last season were superb), and maybe even be a better option than the more expensive Bissouma (odds on him coming have shortened dramatically) .

I think we still need a naturally left sided attacker too. To upgrade on Anwar. For me, he’s pretty much at his ceiling, and his game would be better suited to a slower paced league where he’s afforded more time and space. He’d do bits for Roma, if that move pans out. Cantwell seems less likely now, but he’d be a good option. or I’d definitely take Damsgaard.

22 Jun 2021 23:44:20
I see John Percy has stated we are going back in for Smith-Rowe - I know it's not going to happen but for a second can we imagine this front 4 at Villa next season, wow!

Buendia, Smith-Rowe, Grealish

01 Jan 2021 22:23:39
Never a peno for me, so soft. We need to invest in a striker in January, Watkins looks tired and needs a rest (he's be unbelievable so far this season to be fair) .

17 Aug 2020 16:48:06
Oh great, talk of City wanting Luiz back :- (.

12 Aug 2020 23:07:53
I see the Rashica links have popped up again!

Lads, non football question (I'm sure Ed will tell me if I need to keep it purely football related 😀) - Myself and my better half are traveling to Birmingham for the Everton game and I was wondering if there are any good recommendations for grub during the day? Again, apologies for the non-footie questions but being from Ireland I'm not up to speed on the culinary delights Birmingham has to offer :-) Thanks Lads!

1.) 22 Aug 2021 10:30:13
Have a look at the Soho Tavern BK1982 it’s about 2 miles from VP.

2.) 22 Aug 2021 13:00:42
What kind of food are you looking to eat mate?

3.) 22 Aug 2021 14:01:47
Thanks for the recommendation Neve :-)

UTVBOYS, honestly we aren't fussy, somewhere nice - We booked Lashan (Indian) for later that night after we beat Everton so maybe a burger place, honestly open to suggestions as I haven't a clue where is nice

Thanks lads!

4.) 22 Aug 2021 15:09:46
Bk, are you sure about Lasan, i love curry and eat it out regularly, Lasan is not your typical Indian, its too fussy for me, only been once, probably won't go again. Lots and lots of choice in the city for curry far better than Lasan.

5.) 22 Aug 2021 17:40:52
Caffu - We actually went to Lashan before and loved it, now that may have been the food or the 9 drinks we had prior to arriving - Going to give it another go to find out LOL. Cheers for the feedback though, if it doesn't deliver this time around I'll certainly pick your brain for an Inidan on our next visit. Thanks mate!

6.) 22 Aug 2021 20:56:22
Bk, what ever you choose enjoy mate, Birmingham city centre is always worth a visit, hope the football is as good as the curry.

{Ed007's Note - Me and Grotbags went down to Birmingham about 10 years ago to meet Ed001 and his daughter for a WWE event and we went to this Chinese place that was absolutely massive, it was 3/4 floors and eat as much as you want. Me and her 'indoors still say it's one of the best value/quality feeds we've had in our 30 odd years together.
Now I think about it it might have been different floors for different types of food but it was great food.}

7.) 22 Aug 2021 21:29:42
Ed, been there with er in doors, great food, its just a pity that Birmingham city centre has nothing to do with them lot at small heath, yet one of the best city centres for culinary delights carries their name. Any villa fans that don't live in Birmingham are missing a great vibrant city, try it, the football in Aston isn't too bad either.

{Ed001's Note - it was very nice.}

8.) 23 Aug 2021 01:49:08
Chung Ying in the Chinese quarter. Hi by the way this is my first post. Up the Villa L4 season ticket holder David.

20 Aug 2021 12:17:28
So no Watkins or Traore this weekend and Bailey unlikely to start :- (

Guess this is the team?

Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett

McGinn, Luiz, Ramsey

Buendia, Ings, El Ghazi.

1.) 20 Aug 2021 13:49:33
Bk don't think you i will be too far away with that selection, l personally wouldn't agree with Deano if that's where he goes, as many of us think he should show players a ruthless streak after last weeks performance . I personally would replace Bailey for Elghazi, Tuanzebe for Cash and Hause for Targett, won't happen but would definitely like to see changes.

2.) 20 Aug 2021 14:35:35
Cash and targett were thrown under the bus by Young and El Ghazi.
Nakamba was just in his little world.

Cash Konsa Ming's Targett
Tuanzebe Luis
Buendia McGinn (JPB or Chucky1)

Gives buendia the role he's pp layed for Norwich and McGinn what he did for Scotland.
If it screws up you got El Ghazi to prove it (like he does well coming off the bench) and Bailey.

3.) 20 Aug 2021 15:16:02
Spot on Scotty, apart from verbal reminders, team changes are the only way to get your point over.

4.) 20 Aug 2021 17:07:15
At this point I think it’s 50/ 50, Smith doesn’t NEED to do anything because there’s no right or wrong answer it’s all opinions.

Cash and Targett were both awful against Watford, attacking wise and defensively, dropping them sends a clear message that if you aren’t up to par you won’t automatically get in. On the other hand you drop them and it sends a message to the rest of the camp, there’s no loyalty, which as the gaffer you can see two ways, ultimately it’s his head on the block if we don’t get results, but then you lose the dressing room and you lose your job irrelevant of results. Then you look at who’s coming in for them, they take the opportunity and all of a sudden we have brilliant competition for this two positions and all is rosey. But how often have we seen our back up players come in cold for cup games in recent seasons and get turned over, so they don’t take the opportunity, where does the gaffer go from there? Flip a coin, work out who did the least worst out of the four and select them?

In my opinion, Cash and Targett get another game, they don’t perform then you look to change it, they do then they keep their spot. But that’s all it is, my opinion, Deano gets paid a hell of a lot for his, and whether he does or doesn’t drop someone after a bad opening game of the season doesn’t determine how good he is as a manager.

Player I would want to see dropped is Nakamba, as I think he’s in a different situation to the other two, he’s never shown extended form over more than one isolated game, and he was also awful against Watford. But again, just my opinion, there are no absolutes in this game and he could play Nakamba Saturday and he could be the difference, who knows.

5.) 20 Aug 2021 17:49:23
Cash and Targett were both excellent last season and I agree they shouldn’t be condemned on the basis of one poor performance. As you said in a previous post Chris, probably just a bit of rustiness. The only way to get rid of that rustiness and improve that match sharpness, is to get games under their belts. Hopefully they’ll both have blinders against the barcodes.

6.) 20 Aug 2021 18:09:12
Fingers crossed mark!

7.) 20 Aug 2021 18:45:51
Targett was sensational last year, he was undropable and one poor game (against Sarr who will have a lot of full backs in his pocket this season) should not define him. Think Cash is most at risk, especially against the top sides, Konsa was immense when deployed on the right and we now have Tuanzebe to cover. Plenty of options.

Midfield is the only area that worries me, I see Spurs are after Sarr (DFM) now, wouldn't be overly surprised to see us move for Winks if so. I know a lot of Villa fans don't rate him but a midfield of McGinn, Luiz and Winks would absolutely do me, 100%.

8.) 20 Aug 2021 19:30:07
We have been linked to a lot of midfielders over the transfer window the likes of JWP, Cantwell, and Winks to name but a few, a rumour which is resurfacing and personally I think is credible is the link to the American midfielder Weston McKennie. Ourselves and Southampton were linked with him this time last year however he chose Juve unsurprisingly, now Juve having signed Locatelli are prepared to let him go. In fairness I haven’t seen much of this guy but apparently he can play either as a defensive or box to box midfielder has two good feet and is deceptively quick. As I say I don’t know that much about him however Brad Friedel thinks he has the ability to play for a top premiership side and in fairness he should be able to judge given his premiership experience.

9.) 20 Aug 2021 19:33:23
According to French sources the deal is for 30 million euros and Spurs will loan him back to Metz for this season, presumably to get round the work permit problem. If that’s the case then, I doubt Spurs will be overly keen on selling Winks this season. It’s just a harmless acronym for Villa fans.

10.) 20 Aug 2021 19:53:20
McKennie would be a really good signing as well John, if he's available then you'd imagine we may be interested, especially after scouting him previously. Fingers crossed.

Big 2 games coming up lads, after that we have a horrible run of games, need points on the board before the international break.

08 Jun 2021 20:50:36
Markdavfrance any insight on Sarr we've been linked with?

1.) 08 Jun 2021 21:06:22
BK, he has given a rundown on rumours page.

2.) 08 Jun 2021 23:40:40
Thanks Dave :-) Ed makes a good point about the work permit!

23 May 2021 18:47:33
Great end to the season - Now, down to business, big big summer ahead! Get it right and we can really kick on!

16 May 2021 13:54:50
100% on Smith that, absolute disastrous game management - Ramsey is not a 10, looked lost for the majority of the game. And in the end, throw on the strikers, we lambasted Bruce for that, Smith deserves to be questioned after that match.

1.) 16 May 2021 14:14:32
With you all the way BK, smith watched his team get dominated all that second half and done nothing to change it until it was to late, yes he brought on jack but that didn’t change the flow of the game, like for like don’t change many games, got to switch around formation imo and when u bring jack on you got to get as much ball as possible to him and that didn’t happen either. I just don’t get smith tbh hence why I don’t think he’s the man to bring us further up the table, he’s cost us more points this season than any player has. cash a big loss again and not having Freddie has cost us every time matey has had to come off or miss a game, another game where Doug gave us nothing, being nothing short of disappointing since Xmas apart from 1 or 2 games, I say it once again if we carry this form into next season we will be in a relegation battle next year.

2.) 16 May 2021 14:27:57
Many on here don't like what i say, however whack, John and BK have said what me and others have been saying for months. I will reiterate, tactically we are poor, we have no one in midfield that can do a job and it is both worrying and frustrating that there is absolutely no evidence that our coaches have a clue. So two games to go and we will almost certainly not get anything from them and the season will end like a damp squib. Its a shame but let's be honest, we have problems with lack of quality in terms if players and coaching methods alike.

3.) 16 May 2021 15:35:42
any manager watching that who is happy with what he sees clearly has very little clue how to change it, he’s a decent manager but not and won’t be a great one, to many of the teams below us have schooled him this year, I don’t have much faith in the guy but I see no point replacing him with an average joe it needs to be a big appointment to take us to the next level or else we just sit back and be happy to be in the premier league, hats off to MB and Leeds the way they play when both winning and losing its great to see it and I’d love us to play with the same energy.

I'm with you AJ, for me if we want to go to the next level we need to improve on El Ghazi and Trez.

The question we need to ask AJ is, are Villa better with Watkins and Tammy or Watkins and Wesley? For me the answer is obvious, I'm all for bringing Tammy back, he instantly improves our options up front and adds much needed competition for places. I would love Damsgaard as well, he looks a very adequate replacement for Jack :-)

Tammy will back himself to get plenty of game time John, 100%!

Lads, I think we need to move on from the mentality of "player A replaces player B" or "player A won't come because he will be on the bench", we need to think bigger. Look at all the top clubs, which Villa aspire to be amongst, they all have quality options off the bench and options for genuine rotation on a weekly basis. This notion that Tammy would have to be happy with a place on the bench is so small time, Tammy signing gives us so many options, we need quality throughout the squad, not just a strong 11 and a load of players happy to warm the bench. Tammy would back himself to get into the 11, whether that's playing 2 up top, or instead of Watkins and that kind of competition will only benefit Aston Villa, it's players and us the fans.

100% Rob, if we can get Tammy on loan and offload Wesley for 15M then that is great business, if Tammy bangs in the goals then we sign him permanently next summer and we have an extra 15M+ in the kitty to put towards JWP etc. Also, Tuanzebe on loan is a shrewd bit of business as I believe he is out of contact next summer and we'd get him on a free.

Took a break from the site recently but have to weigh in here lads. It's perfectly fine to be critical of Smith but not want him sacked, I think calls for his head are excessive but I absolutely can understand why fan have become slightly disillusioned with Smith. 5-3-2 works against certain teams and doesn't against others, there is a distinct lack of flexibility despite now having a squad filled with options. If he doesn't show more adaptability and improved game management then he will ultimately lose his job, and I don't subscribe to the "well who do we get that's better" argument, Smith deserves a chance to continue in the role but if performances don't become more consistent he will pay the price. Now let's get behind the team!

I think we needed a ball playing hiding midfielder TOV - Bissoma the obvious option, albeit and very ambitious one. My concern isn't as our inability to win the ball back but how easily we lose it when we do, that's why I think the club were pushing so hard for JWP. This for me is a gap in the squad, which is such shame considering the strength in other areas.

I think you're right DBS, and I don't want to sound super negative (as I'm not, honestly 😂) but I do feel a little let down by this window as we are so close, one last push and some luck with injuries etc and we had a genuine chance of good progression this season. Anyway, I've probably spoken about this too much, you will all be sick of hearing from me. UTV.

It's a tough one Caffu, I'm sure everybody is hopeful Villa push on this season, me included, but I just feel a little deflated about the transfer window. A statement signing in Midfield would genuinely transform this team, for me it's the missing piece of the jigsaw to confidently compete with the Evertons, West Hams, and possibly even the Leicesters etc of the world. That being said, I still think this is a solid team that worst case won't see us regress if witnessing little genuine progression this season.
