Big big signing in tonight. I've just been given the thumbs up by a villa insider that a big deal is done and will be announced in the next few hours. It will be the only one in and Pl has left with the squad now a very happy man. I've not been told the name but it is my belief That we have gone back in for defour and got the deal done. Loan till end of season with a view to buy then. Great bit of business by Pl.

Hoolahan
has had a falling out with a ssn reporter off camera but he has been told he is still very much a Norwich player whether in the first team or development squad, and could find himself being shipped out to the Championship on loan, meanwhile Norwich have 2 players coming in 1 is Yobo the other is unknown at the present

As for the so called fans who want Lerner out be careful what you wish for. We may get a owner who wants to rename our club. If say Al Fayhed bought us he would probably change our name to Aston Thriller just so he had somewhere to put his god awful Michael Jackson statue.

{Ed013's Note - Great game for the neutrals, Fabian Delph for England?}
Last week I posted that our defence was crap and someone pointed out that only 10 clubs had conceded less. Well last night was the perfect example of how poor the defence really is when under pressure. Vlaa was ok just, but as for the rest"? We still need a partner for Vlaar and not just a defender. We need a character with some desire to win almost at any cost. Old villain.
Agree0
Disagree0
Vlaar is absolute class! He is more important than benteke to our team. As for a partner for him you can't really blame pl because he did buy one that I think is a very good player but we just got very unlucky with okore but is there any point in signing another when he's set to be back in a few months and with the little funds villa have we should be spending it on a creative midfielder.

Still think this will happened before the window, looks like Defour is in talks with Fulham.
Agree0

Why do people think Norwich will allow Hoolahan to join Villa? He's a contacted player, they do not need to or want to sell he will be put out to the reserves rather than let him go to Lambert, Norwich are not needing to raise funds in order to buy first
Agree0

I think that you will find that ALL prem. clubs need money. None are so flush that a million quid will not make them sit up and take notice.
Agree0

Norwich will not sell Wes to a rival club and defiantly not to Villa to much bad blood between clubs

Read your local Telegraph, Lambert has changed his mind on Hoolahan, Norwich report Villa underhand approach
Agree0
Disagree0
This report shows Villa what they really are, Lambert didn't want Hoolahan in the first place He only wanted to unsettle him and effect the rest of the team attitude towards Him, He brings in Holt, gets him to mention how good it would be to play with Hoolahan again like they did at Norwich, It just shows how much Lambert has sunk, Hoolahan is staying put and will be playing Tuesday at Carrow road
Agree0
Disagree0
Yes mate, it's all a big nasty plot against Norwich.
You're not paranoid, Lambert's really after you
Tiresome. Grow up
Agree0

Ha! Persecution complex or what? Rather than do the job that he is paid to do; every decision that Lambert makes is just to unsettle Norwich Football Club? Really? Typical Norwich fan. Suffering from delusions of adequacy. The world revolves it's polar axis. Not around a mustard making town whose inhabitants have 6 fingers on each hand.

Im sure Lambert has got bigger issues to deal with other than trying to unsettle norwich players, for example trying to turn Villa into a half decent side

Ravell Morrison would be fantastic for us. The exact signing we need. He has brilliant technical ability, can split the defense open because he certainly knows where the right pass it (which none of our midfield can do) and has also got a goal in his locker (which again none of our midfielders do, two of them have only scored there first goal for us this season!). He is a future star please randy open up 8 mil and get him he would really complete our squad.

That was an outstanding display of passionate football. The team proved that they can raise their game and truly there was not a weak spot on the pitch. Spirit, desire, willingness were all on display for the entire game. Makes me proud again to be a villa supporter. Now watch someone post that Liverpool were poor. My answer is b. l. is, villa were brilliant.
Believable0
Unbelievable0
Totally agree with you oldvillan except for when you mention the weak links. For me and many others there were a few, namely El Amahadi, the guy runs round hardly wanting to receive the ball. He also gives it away to the opposition than a team mate. fell asleep for sturridge goal letting Henderson free. Clark again falls asleep at vital moments, got away with a couple yesterday but was punished for the sturridge goal by not marking him properly. He tends to read the game too late. Though I do not think he is a good defender at this level, I do think he could be a good midfielder. Don't know why Lowton was not in the squad as Bacuna again is awful at right back. He should never play there as he can not defend. If we could buy a decent centre half and a midfielder I think with the arrivals of Holt and Bertrand especially who was superb yesterday then we will be fine for the rest of the season.

Absolute great performance from the villa. Seeing the old Benteke and Gabby was superb until he got injured. Vlaar and Clark handle SAS easily. I don't think that it was a penalty for Liverpool but I ll take a point anyday. Bertrand on his debut played well aginst Sterling. Now we can just hope that we make som good transfer signings. I would like to see in Ravel Morrison or any creative player and another loanee in and I think we can finish in the top half at least.

PL is having to play his cards close to his chest so that he can get the result he wants.
Lerner is allowing him to bring in players that cost nothing but PL will be allowed a middle of the road, £5-£7m, player and is possibly in talks with such a player. If he can get a couple of players within the total amount then Lerner will see that as an acheivment.
Defour, Dann, Naughton.
Can he get all 3 within that range?
Doubt it.

Bertrand is a player iv been calling out for since 2010! But I feel it will be another walker! Go on to better things at Chelsea! Personally I feel we have wasted our 2 loan options. Holt. If lambert really wanted him that bad then £500K would of signed him personally! So we have lost a loan option there that could of been used for I. e Zaha! Bertrand. We really should of pushed for the perm purchase as I said before he will not return in the summer if Chelsea don't have him back a bigger team will like spurs or Liverpool or even Everton if they sell baines! As for Defour, again a player I have been crying out for, for years! Just spend the money and we will progress! There will be no takeover! Lerner just wants to start making a profit out of the club year on year.

I recently told about the unkown signing after the game vs arsenal, turned out to be grant holt, not what I was hoping for. But villa are still very much in for hoolahan regardless of bad blood we are talking 1.5 mil for a 31 yr old with 18 mths on his contract and woth no sell on value this offer will not come around again.
Also the defour links have some substance but he appears to be angling towards a move to the spuds. It has also recently came out the chadli getting no playing time so villa want to get him in on loan with a view to buy at the end of the season.
Don't be surprised to see a bid for a defensive midfielder alsonothing concrete but I would be looking towards diame from west ham, PL exexperience young and only £3.5 mil

Surely if spurs are looking to let Lewis Holtby go out on loan we should be at least trying to persuade him to prove himself in the premiership with us. He is a quality attacking midfielder and would certainly provide chances for our strikers.
Thoughts?

Would be ideal but scrooge won't budge on his wage cap.

Apparently Chadli will look for a move too wouldn't mind us trying to pick him us as we were supposed to be after him before Spurs signed him. Especially if Spurs are after Defour like his agent said they'll have so much class just sat on the bench. If it was me i'd just phone and as about everyone Holtby, Chadli ect. but again probably wages rule everything out.
Agree0

15 Jan 2014 17:40:57
I find the whole wage cape scenario pretty interesting in regards to the future of football, maybe I do not understand it properly, but surely if Villa and similar clubs stick to this sort of wage structure plan long term, then we will never be able to sign first class players, taking us on to higher levels? Isn't this what every PL club should be aiming for? What is there to play for if this is the case? (You could argue the entertainment is enough, but Villa can't even tick that box at the moment) Oh yea, the FA cup! ha.

Agree0

Hi Mendax, the amount he has been allowed to spend dictates that he shops in the lower end of the market and hopes to develop his buys.
Unfortunately our league performances mean that the opportunity to develop these players by getting them on the pitch is severely limited.
If we could get a gap on the lower half of the table so that they play without fear PL might just give some of them a better chance.
I agree that there is no style and nobody to create a style.
Style players cost. and that's where we came in!

It is not the transfer money that you need to add up, it is the amount of money that the players are demanding. Lerner will not sanction ridiculous contacts hence PL needing to shop cheap.
It is a bit like grocery shopping, W------ offer the best but we can only afford S---------- or T-----.
But if we look further we find what we want in A----, L----, etc just a bit cheaper.
Thats where PL is having to shop.

Hi all.
see below something I have seen on one website, typical.
Just days after former Aston Villa striker John Carew recommended Stefan Marius Johansen to the club, he is reportedly close to a deal with Celtic.
Last week, former Aston Villa striker John Carew pointed his old team in the direction of one of Norway’s brightest stars.
Telling Paul Lambert’s side that they would be wise to cast an eye over Stromsgodset midfielder Stefan Marius Johansen, Carew called the player a “Duracell rabbit with tekkers”, and said he would be a good addition to the current Villans’ squad.
Reports at the same time suggested Celtic were interested in the 23-year-old, so if Villa were going to take their former striker’s advice, they may have had to move quickly.
But the latest reports from Norway claim Johansen is set for talks with the Scottish side having left his national team’s training camp in Abu Dhabi.
STV Sport has published the Norwegian Football Federation’s statement that Johansen had withdrawn from the training camp and was “in final negotiations with a club”.
Which club that may be is not certain, but quotes in the same story from Celtic boss Neil Lennon confirmed his side had been in talks with the player and was hopeful a deal could be finalised shortly.
With Johansen seemingly on his way, it appears Carew’s recommendation was too late for Lambert, but Celtic may be signing a player of real promise for potentially a bargain fee.
Looks like another tip cast aside by our management and board, they really are bloody thick at VP

Why torture ourselves by speculating about quality players?

Let's face it. Lambert is preparing us for the Championship followed by league 1
He must be, it's the only way his buys make sense
Agree0

It's alright you saying he's preparing us for relegation, but what do you want expect him to do, no well known/experienced prem players are going to be willing to take a wage cut to come to Villa and the ones that will are probably past their best. We can all say, let's go by so and so and pay huge wages it'll be worth it but then that just makes the last few seasons pointless. let's be honest you get what you pay for and were offering pennies. Lambert can only play the hand he's delt

He should go with the next gen and play Gary Gardner, don't buy championship players or cheap imports waste of money before injury Gardner looked the part, he can't be worse than any player PL has bought

Hi Mendax, Disappointed in you.
PL is doing what he is told.
PL does not want Villa to go down and I am sure that he is telling Lerner that he needs to open his purse. Only problem is that we don't know what Scrooge is telling him, but you can be assured that he does not want to go down.

Wells' prospective transfer was always only ever speculation. The reason for the drop in his odds was that journalists established Villa were in talks with Bradford and put 2 an 2 together and made 5. Of course Villa were in talks over Graham's loan deal.

Have seen on one website declaring an interest from Aston Villa in a player from Bradford City called Nahki Wells.
Take a look on youtube, this guy is a natural and I would welcome him a VP.
I know he is young and from a lower division but so was Michael Owen and Kevin Keegan.
About 2m they reckon would get him, go for it I say, he looks fearless and takes a pop from anywhere.

{Ed001's Note - when was Michael Owen in a lower division? He started at Liverpool, went to Real Madrid, then to Newcastle, then Man Utd, then to Stoke and retirement. Well he really retired when he left Liverpool as his career was spent on the sidelines, but I was trying to be nice about the little weasel. He was always a top flight footballer mate.}

Hi Ed.
Sorry about the quote above, I was under the impression M. Owen played for Chester in his early days.
But still my point is that players from the lower divisions can become stars of the future, and this young man looks a natural goal scorer.
I think alongside a big man up front and given a bit of time he will develop into a very competent striker
Is there any truth I Villa`s interest!
villadave
Agree0

{Ed001's Note - no worries mate, I just thought I would point it out, he was born in Chester, if I remember rightly. It was Ian Rush that Liverpool brought in from Chester, and he was seen as such a flop in his first 3 years at Liverpool that it led to the scout, Geoff Twentyman, losing his job. Sometimes you have to have a lot of patience with young players, as Rushie did alright in the end....}
I think PL has bought enough players from lower leagues and cheap imports, with these players only one way the championship if not this year next, the so called project is flawed you need at the least 4 class player for the younger players to learn there trade at ease, no tension I honestly believe by luck he as bought 1 good player we must get a director of football Hoddle for me no long ball experts
Agree0
Disagree0
I do not completely think the buy young hungry is completely flawed the problem was having no experience! I think Lambert should buy a few experience players and keep buying young along as he keeps moving on players he sees as not good enough!
we have to move on Given Ireland Hutton Stevens Bent Kea Bennet Bowrey Delfonso that it self has to be about £300. 000 a week! we could at least
get 5 quality players may it be young or experienced!
Agree0
Disagree0
Agreed we do need experience as I have said in previous posts, but this guy looks very good and at 2m which is the sort of figure stated on the website I think it would be worth a pop.
If he scored less than half of the total he has scored for Bradford, he would be better value than most of our current forwards.
Worth a shot in my opinion, we need goals full stop, and with a decent AM who would help with balls into spaces.

If Wells came it would be great, saw him when they played us and he was their best player in my opinion, however if he is Premier League standard is another question, a couple of years then yeah maybe

So you saw him play once? against us anyone would look good, teckers was magic against everyone last year he's a bit off form at the moment ( see my point ) PL bough only championship quality we need proven prem players Delph only looks good because the midfield is the poorest Iv have seen at villa
Agree0
Disagree0
Refusing to bring in lower league players is ridiculous, often you can get them for a good price and as long as you don't base your whole squad on them they can be successful for a top tier team. Personally I wouldn't be unhappy with Wells in claret and blue, a helpful striker who is young, if he doesn't preform there is the oppurtunity to put him up for loan

Norwich Fan, I come in peace! Wesley Hoolahan. looks like he's on the way to villa park. or so we hear our end. He is a good, talented player dubbed "the irish messi" by us. however. he's 31 years old, very inconsistant and hates a physical scrap. so good luck! don't get me wrong, he's been a great servant to us, and we will miss him because at times he is magic on the ball. but he won't single handedly save us this year, and he won't save you either, so its a bizarre transfer from our end. He may well be struggling but if you don't put yourself in the firing line then you do not improve.
PL has his hands tied by Lerner.
He may well have believed he could get players and develop them but would have expected a little help from the owner without getting the begging bowl out.
All role changes require different problems to be solved and I am in agreement that PL has not been successful in a lot of areas.
A manager lives by the performance of the players on the pitch and frequently they just do not perform. Ask David Moyes how he feels about players that win the prem. then fail to respond.
PL may well be the next manager out of the door but he will have tried to improve himself without a lot of success.

How many new signings do we need this month? At least 4 in my opinion. CB, LB, DMC and finally a creative offensive player which the fans turning up and paying to see a game at villa park deserve. Watching your team at home getting outplayed nearly every week is torture. I wonder if The manager, board and chairman are aware of the fact that statistically we're the worst home team in the football league.
The club needs to show some ambition in this window, we'r all fed up of the cheap imports now. However with wage cap implemented we can only afford to buy cheap unknowns again so why bother going to watch the dross at villa park? If the club aren't willing to spend money on good players why should we pay good money to go watch them?
Finch

The point in going to "see this dross" is they're our team. I know it's poor and it's absolutely gutting to see us in the state we are but if we turn away because things are going poorly how will that inspire the players and how are we ever going to s*** this stupid "fickle fans" reputation.

The point is a valid enough one, but I'd like to also let you know fans of ALL teams are fickle. The reason why villa fans have this reputation is because of our proud history in comparison to today's showing. I'm not expecting the dizzy heights towards the top of the league or anything like that but a lack of desire & ambition from the club doesn't reflect the ticket price, travel etc for me. and I'd suggest if the club aren't willing to invest the fans shouldn't either

I have seen the relegation down to the 3rd div, the FA cup win etc etc, but never have I seen such a performance from any team named Aston Villa over the last few games.
No spirit, no pride, no idea.
Soon I will have to make my decision about spending more money than Scrooge is willing to give to PL.
Given the funds I still believe we could become an upper mid table team not fighting to avoid the drop.
PL will not be sacked because Lerner knows that he will not be able to get another person prepared to buy into his vision, so he will give him a couple of quid and expect more miracles.

Hi all.
I would imagine PL is now one defeat away from the sack.
It would not surprise me if we have a candidate already lined up, It is quite apparent that Paul Lambert is not up to the task of managing a club the size of Aston Villa.
His line up today confirmed to me that he does not have a clue, he is still not sure of his best team, although neither am I to be honest.
This squad performed very well towards the end of last season and gave us all great hope for this season.
Our team has no shape, no backbone, and no midfield.
To me this all points to poor management and coaching techniques.
The time has come for Lerner to man up and find a replacement, give whoever the funds needed, or get up and go himself.

Im hearing good things as of late, the old one that doing the run around before, that we are going the make a good effort for lescott, if we can get the last of the bomb squad out there is a great chance we come up with the wage demands, The 2nd one I'm hearing about is Defoe with a repoted 6 million could snap him we will be putting our selfs in there, I can't be sure on cm so I'm guessing Rodwell is the obvious target maybe milliner but he is playing well as of late, anybody thinking of little Wes from our good old friends Norwich? As of defenders just anybody is better than what we have a times

Kodak's broken his leg, so Lambert will be in the market for a striker. Jurgen Locadia is one option I believe

With kozaks injury does this mean will play helinus and surely means we will be dipping into the market at sometime in the near future I just hope it's for jermaine defoe

Im hoping both happen, I really wanna see helinus show his class. plus been waiting for 10 years for defoe to sign for villa.

Helenius will most likely start against Sheffield on the weekend so if he impresses he could become a regular starter, however I think we do need to sign an experienced striker, such ad Defoe and get young back to the club it is rumoured we are favourites at 2:1 to sign him

if this is a project these players I presume would be part of it, all new players are at best championship players why can't PL see this, I can only see poor football, no player can excite the crowd, every team should have 1class player, I don't think this team would beat the one PL took over

Believable0

Money talks. Cardiff offer him a big spend, Scrooge offered him a project to buy cheap, then develop and sell to create an investment to buy further cheap players.
In all honesty what would any of us do in a similar situation?
Heres hoping that the purse opens and PL gets the chance to buy a seasoned leader for the team.
I can supply a can of wd40 if its needed.

Whether we have missed a trick in not getting Solskjaer will become apparent in the next few months
Where it's clear we did really miss out to our cost, was with Martinez
That said, would either of them have had any chance with Lerner in charge?
Villa are becoming a managers graveyard
Agree0

Its quite apparent that lerner has no ambition for this club hence the reason solskjar and martinez turned us down. The penny will finally drop to lambert and he will tell lerner to shove his club up his arse.

Solskjaer didn't want to come up against ferguson that's why he didn't come to us at the time

Hi, what do you think will happen to Benteke in the transfer window? Already, the press have been talking about his transfer to one of the media darling clubs. Any thoughts? He still looked jaded today but an underperforming Benteke was still able to contribute as much as any other player.

Hi Ben.
I think Benteke will stay put until the summer, and then maybe one of the top four clubs like Arsenal, Man U, or maybe even Everton to replace Lukaku will come in for him.
I would prefer him to stay put because he is a top drawer player, but to achieve this we must push on with some quality signings to improve our position, ie top 8.
So I think he will be here for the rest of the season.

So there's quite a few rumors knocking around at the minute, these are the ones I think are A) realistic and B)worthwhile
Zaha on loan (quite a few clubs interested and think he'll create a lot of chances)
Which leads to my next one
Jordan Rhodes, proven goal scorer, clinical and think he would get on well with Paul (especially being a Scottish international)
Lescott (possibly on loan) I know there's a whole wage issue but I think it would be worth paying them for a season or two, he's a class CB and would add experience.
Joey Barton, I personally really want this to happen, besides all the off-field actions he's a top midfield player who, let's not forget, was in and around the England set-up before certain incidents, and he's passion would rub off on the younger players on and off the field.
Bertrand & De Bruyne, Chelsea "normally" stump up some or all of the wages for players on loan and they are both clearly top top players, and with rumors of cole heading off perhaps a loan deal for Ryan would suit him more than a permanent one.

Thank finally!
A few things good about today:
We were finally the better team in a game
We won the game
And, what I think is more important, lambert said he wanted to sign a few experienced players! I think he has realised we need some older players to teach the younger ones.
Good day for Villa

Did you watch the match villa were not better 62%/38% possession to Sunderland PL is a lucky manager if you like watching boring football and all you care about is the win that's up to you
Agree0

We were the better team. Sunderland were better until we scored which was very early. mthey had more of the ball but in useless area where they didn't look harmful and I am definitely glad with the win. Look where we are in the table now and remember benteke had his shot brilliantly cleared off the line. Gutted about that because he would have had his confidence back but now he'll think he can never score

All the people banging on about helenius, he is young and expected to improve but isn't ready yet, been average when he's played. Kozak is scoring goals regardless of how bad a footballer he can look. Bowery works hard and will out himself about which lambert likes.
Also those saying play Gary Gardner, he's not played regularly for years and half the player delph is!

Still carrying a few pints then.
Helenius IS ready, he is an International mate.
Kozak scores goals that are gifted.
Bowery championship material at best.
And Gardener would figure under most managers with the squad we have.

Villadave u are crazy. I'm not the person that wrote that above but I agree with all of it. I can't believe you think helenius is a premier league standard player yet. He could be but definately not yet. I go to work with a Everton fan and after we played them he came to me the next Monday and said I quote ' that helenium is the worst player I've seen' he played for 10 minutes in that game. Helenius is not anywhere near the standard you think but he could be in a few years time. And how many times have you seen helenius play? Maybe 30 minutes worth. Lambert sees him everyday in training and knows how he is progressing. We did only spend 2 million on him and if he was playing everyone would be complaining about how 'championship level' he is. Give him time
Agree0

Hi whoever you are.
"Thanks for the crazy label"
It is an opinion I have "not a fact".
I have not said he is premier league standard, I have simply said he is ready to play in our side, he needs a chance to be brought up to speed.
I have seen Helenius play probably 20 times or more the full 90 minutes,
you seem to forget what I have posted before, I trade on football matches and have a set up where I can watch live games in Europe all day long, and I make a part time living doing it.
I watch at least 2 games a day every day, I have four screens.
I am not saying this makes me any sort of expert all, but it does help in understanding different countries football styles and player development.
So please don't say I have never seen him.

Hi Dave, my angle on it is that I think helenius needs to build up his core muscle strength before being able to hold down the rigours of the premier league.

Hi Finch.
I know what you are saying, but don't be fooled by his build.
The Danish league have some pretty tough cookies playing, and have seen Helenius take some bone breaking tackles mate.
What about Crouch?
Like I have said he ain't going to toughen up warming the bench is he

Remember the players don't learn everything from playing matches he will be delveloping from training with a player like benteke
Agree0

If that's your thinking fine.
But I don't know anybody who thinks a player becomes a player from training, they learn yes, but playing games is the only way mate, it doesn't matter which way you look at it.

Surely this lad deserves a role within the 1st team. Our best prospect in years.

Well I said months ago On here Pl wants defour and Rodwell and I was laughed at and called a dreamer. Now others are getting links months after they will be fab signings and bla bla bla. Well kingvilla told you first and both are very real targets as up to 3 more experienced players will come in this windows. 2 midfield players and another striker and also a lb if the funds were there but that's probably for the summer more.
