Teun Koopmeiners would be an excellent addition to the squad!

Pride of Lions

1.) 30 Sep 2020 19:35:50
Don`t know a great deal about him POL, would be good as a utility player, and for that reason we could put more choices on the bench.
is there any interest.

2.) 30 Sep 2020 19:48:59
Yes, he can play in midfield or CB. Only 22. He has said he would like to play in The Premier League. I think Leeds have been sniffing around. He would be relatively cheap too. Rumours are 8-10 million.

3.) 30 Sep 2020 19:51:20
Not really an area we need back up at the minute, certainly not his main position anyway, I know he has played centre back at times but he’s much more comfortable at centre mid where we have more than enough at the minute.

4.) 30 Sep 2020 20:04:42
For that sort of money POL, I think he would be well worth a look at mate.
I see on Transfer Market, he has been used in 4 positions, D/ M, C/ M and C/ B left and right.
Makes him an attractive proposition, Dutch as well, they tend to adapt well to our game.

{Ed002's Note - Aston Villa have shown no interest in Koopmeiners.}

5.) 30 Sep 2020 20:11:16
I know now Ed, Just replying to Pride of Lions.

{Ed002's Note - He would be a great buy if it were possible.}

6.) 30 Sep 2020 20:29:31
You are right chrisAVFC at the moment he's not our priority but he's young, versatile and at the moment relatively inexpensive.

Villadave I agree and he's on the verge of a full international call up too.

I suggest him as cover at CB, maybe then we can use Hause as cover at LB. Koopmeiners can also provide cover at both fullback positions and also cover for Douglas Luiz. All in all it would kill a lot of birds with one stone!

7.) 30 Sep 2020 20:40:22
Spot on POL, cover for so many positions is a valuable asset in today`s game.
Since you first posted about him, I have and spoke to people and they are all positive, and say what a great prospect he is.

8.) 30 Sep 2020 21:08:44
Nelsson similarly can cover a number of defensive positions, primarily CB, but also DM. and I think he’s the one we’re after.

9.) 30 Sep 2020 21:20:49
Yep that`s another one Ant, and yes we have been linked with him, versatility is a great plus, especially as we are weak at L/ B.

10.) 30 Sep 2020 20:18:31
Yes I agree Ed, I have been reading about him, and he sounds a very useful player.
What do you reckon he would sell for?

{Ed002's Note - Perhaps €15M. Teun Koopmeiners (DM/CM) Milan have had an approach for Koopmeiners rebuffed after losing out on three other DM players. They do not have the funds to push to force a sale. Fulham enquired after him before the window opened but it went no further at that time. Leeds have spoken with his representatives and think something can be done. If there is interest from Everton he would be a Brands choice and he is a very well thought of young player. Against a move happening are a number of points: (a) I am not sure that AZ Alkmaar would be open to selling their captain; (b) he plays in a side which plays a style of football Brands would like to instill throughout the entire club - but he is not being supported by the club in making that happen, and having Carlo as a different thinking coach won't help that quest; (c) if Gbamin is fit where does he fit in - although I see the argument that he would be an ideal Morgan Schneiderlin replacement - but will that give him sufficient game time. West Ham also enquired.

11.) 30 Sep 2020 23:26:54
Thank you very much for that, well I am certainly wiser than I was.
He is obviously a decent player, the sort we need to move forward.

12.) 01 Oct 2020 05:56:05
If Nakamba was to go as he’s being linked with a move to Turkey, definitely a great replacement 👍🏻

UTV.

13.) 02 Oct 2020 18:23:22
Smith has suggested any further signings will only result from other players leaving. Although Nakamba and Trezeguet could be possible targets, I think the following five are the players Villa would be more comfortable to move on:

Kalinic, Nyland, Guilbert, Jota and El Ghazi

Although Elmohamady, Taylor and Lansbury are in the final year of their deals, the salaries paid to rach of them will put off likely suitors, who are looking for players of their calibre/ age. I can see all three leaving on expiration of their current contracts. I pretty much feel Villa have accepted that.

So,the transfer window has closed and it's been pretty underwhelming!
At the end of last season we all said our team was short of what we need.
Gk needed competition
Defence needed competition and upgrading.
At least one DM needed to allow Dougie and Mcginn to play in their flavoured position.
More attacking options and prolific goalscorer needed.

The signings we've made apart from Coutinho have not been marquee and probably aren't the ones we would have bought on Football Manager.
Our new CB has now been injured which has caused us to have to find an emergency replacement at short notice ( which we've done). This may or may not have impacted on us getting a striker.

Don't get me wrong, I think our recruitment team needs sorting because they are not as good as they should be because other teams seem to find gems and we haven't for quite a while.

But overall our squad shortages have mainly been addressed ( again, not with the players we as fans might have wanted, but addressed all the same).

If this is the stepping stone to strengthening towards improvement then ok.I know he said quality over quantity ( the jury is out on this) but I don't think it's as bad as it could have been ( Leicester) or as good as it could have been (Man City, I know!).

This maybe the transition season in our "project" and as such I think SG will now have no excuses as he's had the money, bought the players, looked at the loanees/youngsters, made the changes and addressed the shortfalls in the squad.

1.) 02 Sep 2022 07:20:46
Why do people keep talking about Luiz's preferred position?
Whether or not you think he is suited to that position he has played as a 6 his entire professional career and has never once referred to himself as anything but a DM/DLP.

2.) 02 Sep 2022 07:55:49
Rk, I guess that you agree with the rest of the post then!

3.) 02 Sep 2022 09:51:04
In parts.
This window was always going to be about improving the depth of the squad more than the first team. Carlos and Kamara were what we needed most and got. Bednarek will be a decent enough option until Carlos is back in my opinion.
We don't need a striker. We have 2 proven goal scorers but we need the manager to play the right way to get the most out of them.
We have the players to be at least 4-5 places higher than last season as long as we have a plan that plays to their strengths. Unless the man that matters bucks up his ideas it doesn't really matter what we did or didn't do in the market.
No European football means we were never likely to get the cream of the crop.

4.) 02 Sep 2022 11:32:24
We will see at the end of the season whether or not we needed a striker or not. At the moment with the system the manager wants to play I don’t think Watkins and Ings will get 20 goals between them, and quite frankly that isn’t good enough for us to progress

5.) 02 Sep 2022 13:28:05
No striker would Ings. We could have tried getting a big target man like Mitrovic to attack crosses but Cash is worse than Shaun Wright Phillips was and the rest of the team make it too easy for defences to crowd the strikers out.
The players have proven before that they are good enough and it should be obvious to any manager worth his salt that if they can't do it in the system then it's the system that is wrong.

6.) 02 Sep 2022 18:30:04
Or you buy the players to suit the system you want to play

7.) 02 Sep 2022 19:40:18
Except you can't buy enough of the players with those qualities until you're in Europe and you can't do it all at once due to finances.
Man City didn't jump straight into the team they are now. They started with a more direct approach while gradually adding players that could eventually make them a team that could dominate the ball.
Pellegrini and Mancini are both managers who prefer the patient build up but they worked with what they had. Mancini eventually got the final pieces of the puzzle in his second season which is when the switch was turned.
A good manager doesn't add 2 or 3 players and expect the rest to be able to change their whole skillset.

8.) 02 Sep 2022 21:30:26
The geordies just spent £60 million on Isak and the last time I looked they weren’t in Europe but I do agree you can’t do it all at once which is why I think Gerrard needs time and a more than a couple of windows to get the players he needs to play the system he wants.

9.) 02 Sep 2022 22:21:42
If he doesn't change until he has those players then he won't be earning that time and it's blind faith that something falls into place.
Newcastle had to spend £60m on a player from a mid-level team who previously failed to convince at Dortmund. It's a huge amount for a relatively unproven risk who could quite easily be the next Haller or Pepe.
The one advantage he has is that he's going to a team with a manager who has set a plan around the limitations of his team rather than trying to make them something they are not.
I've never rated Howe as a top manager and I guarantee he gets replaced when they start pushing up the table regularly but it's things like the Joelinton move to midfield that show he's got the intelligence to work around what he has at his disposal.

Hi all, hope you're well and had a good Bank Holiday.
I was a fan as SG as a player and was excited when he was appointed as Manager. I know being a great player doesn't translate to being a good Manager but with what he did at Rangers and with our owners and their ambitions for the club combined with who we could realistically appoint at the time, I thought he was a good fit.Things haven't gone well for us under his stewardship and he is making mistakes. He has had plenty of time already to make us perform better than we are currently doing. The early transfers this season were promising however I feel that we need players that can come into the first eleven rather than add depth to the squad. Looking through our squad,we had at the beginning of preseason about 11 eleven players that needed to be sold ( not loaned but if no-one will buy them then loans is the next best alternative)
If we want to be a team challenging for Europe then most of our current first eleven would end up being squad players ( which they probably wouldn't like and want to move).
This is a difficult situation for him and considering that we haven't signed the player calibre that we need makes it even harder. The recruitment team should have had a number of targets to approach and seem to be failing in that respect. Compared to other clubs our spending has been small. I understand that the ground improvements may impact this which is where having a strong youth set up will alleviate having to make huge transfer outlays. Our youths are good but not quite ready therefore another conundrum for SG to have to deal with.
I'm not saying he should stay and get more time or that he should be sacked ( unless we can get a top class manager like Poch or a great coach like Potter) but I think as fans we need to take this into consideration.

Sooooo,
Captain stripped of Captaincy, relegated to subs bench and called out in public.
Brightest youth prospect sold.
Two squad players banished to train with kids.
Another supposedly bright youth prospect R/B loaned out.
Out of form players continually picked.
Only sold 2 players out of the 8 that need moving on.
Lost embarrassingly to newly promoted team.
Make of it what you will!

Get it right greedy youth player,he wasnt our best youth player not a chance

2.) 13 Aug 2022 10:44:34
Re the captaincy issue a significant number of people thought Mings wasn’t worthy of a place let alone the captaincy so not a total surprise that Gerrard decided to give it to someone else. Re the brightest youth prospect he wanted £100k a week to re sign and made it fairly clear that if he didn’t get it he was going to hold out and go for next to nothing in 12 months time. The club were not going to be held to ransom and sold him for £20 million that's fantastic business from an economic perspective. Personally I’d have held on to the little sod and made sure he played absolutely no football at all for 12 months but then again I can be a tad vindictive at times?. Re trying to sell players I am sure some will go before the window closes clubs are just waiting for the last minute ‘fire sales’ to happen.

Morning all.I think that where we are going wrong is that in a 4-3-3 formation your front 3 need to be strikers who can all score goals. We have Coutinho, who is a creative midfielder and Bailey, who is a winger. Neither will score the 15 goals a season that is needed.Coutinho needs to be played deeper to create from the middle of the park with defensive legs around him to allow him to "do his thing "
With the players we have in a 4-3-3 we would have to play DI,OW,& CA which would leave us with little or no cover. We need more forwards or a change in formation.
Midfield is not too bad because we have players who can play there but Coutinho and Buendia need to be the deeper playmaker just behind the attackers but with defensive players or " engines " around them.
Defense needs sorting and that is a major concern however I think SG is at the start of sorting it out by giving Mings a " kick up the rear" bringing in Chambers and Carlos and having back up at fullback. Still a way to go but we still have a few weeks before the transfer window closes if more players are needed. If we can get rid of the rest of the deadwood and get 1 or 2 of REAL quality then i think we will be ok. This season i would expect us to finish around 10th.The loss to Bournemouth is bad but newly promoted teams sometimes are on " a high" at the beginning of a new season especially if they were Champions. Hopefully SG and the team will see that there needs to be improvement and this will happen soon. Just my thoughts! UTV.

I agree Pride, it's one game (albeit a very poor performance) so we need a little perspective - We need to be more pragmatic IMO, we don't have the midfield players to play such expansive football - I think we'll see Kamara, Luiz, McGinn in the centre next week against Everton as we cannot continue to play 2 box to box Midfielders, we can't control the midfield if we do and that is absolutely killing us. If we want to see the best of Coutinho, Buendia, Bailey we need to get them the ball more often and to do that we need to control the centre of the park - With Ramsey AND McGinn in there we don't! My biggest worry is, if we lose to Everton, the fans could really start to turn on Gerrard and the whole atmosphere could become toxic.

Morning all, I'm not a doom and gloom however Villa are concerning me. Be in no doubt that on current form we are in a relegation fight, we are probably the highest placed of those that are in it but that could easily change. Looking back, when S.G came in Rangers fans posted that he was rigid with his thinking. Our transfers are always tinged with some form of doubt. Our squad is nowhere near good enough for anything other than at best midtable. Looking forward, when we sign new players they need to be an upgrade on what we have and the players we have then become squad players ( this is difficult because as soon as first team players become squad players they want to leave). Our youngsters are talented but are still a season away from being able to be relied upon to carry us through a season. We need new players in almost every position and this cannot be achieved in one or even two transfer windows. We need to survive this season then have a mass clear out once new players of quality ( relative to our position and ambition can be obtained). We can use the youngsters but only sparingly. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens between here and September. UTV.

Pride of Lions

1.) 25 Feb 2022 11:26:19
POL, based on this season as a whole and current form, like you i am concerned. Two different managers with their own styles same results. I have said consistently over the last two seasons we have not bought either wisely or players of the quality required to push on, its not as though we haven't spent enough, we just haven't bought players that match the level of investment. Based on what i have witnessed recently, Ings, Watkins, Luiz, Cash, and at times, Mings and Ramsey, are not playing at the level that will keep us clear of the dog fight we are in. Watford summed up for me how poor we are, they hadn't won for nearly three months yet made us look bang average. So Man utd Chelsea and man city we started poorly, only to recover and get one point total. Brentford we couldn't defend and was one of the very few positive results they had achieved recently. Newcastle was just dire football. Everton was our only recent win and we rode our luck as Everton had plenty of chances to score. Watford was dismal. So if we haven't got the players and tactics are questionable, it's not hard to see why the rest of the season could be difficult.

2.) 25 Feb 2022 21:12:20
We are definitely an inconsistent team and I am sure a mass clear out will take place come the summer but some of the players that being mentioned as poor by some of the posters on here surprises me, for example Cash has come in for some stick yet he is being tracked by Athletico Madrid, Douglas Luiz, inconsistent certainly but if he was as bad as some on here would have you believe would he be being tracked by Arsenal, Spurs and Roma? The squad definitely needs 5 or 6 quality additions and will then be in a position to challenge the top six in my opinion. I am concerned though that one of the players being linked with a move away is Konsa as I think he is a quality centre back at the right age who we should be looking to build around not one we should ditch.

3.) 26 Feb 2022 00:10:28
As usual loti balanced views, however players like Luiz and cash being tracked doesn't make them quality players, of course they are decent players, unfortunately they are far too inconsistent to be regulars in a top side.

LOTI totally agree with your 2 lists. We need to get rid of your first list and try and buy better than the 2nd list and that is how you build a stronger squad. If/ when we do buy better we also need to keep the players we have and not allow them to move because they now have competition or less game time. ( Matt Targett/ Lucas Digne)

Allyp 1972 name the 3 you'd like to see us get, everyone of us loves our club and is entitled to an opinion.

scottcafu I understand where you're coming from but the higher we finish in the league, the more money we get and enhances our position for new signings, which is why Deano is playing 'his strongest team ' Be mindful that under 20years of age the youngsters have to be introduced carefully.

Villajohn you may well be right, I just hope he gets a good value deal on 4 good players lol.

Villadave, yes it's all speculation and it will all become clear soon enough!

Markdavfrance the players that you've mentioned are exciting prospects too.

Hi, I agree and that is why we needed 2 in there Luiz and a n other to help/ cover him. If we had a player who was more disciplined then great, but we don't, hence the point of this formation because he is what we have.
