The anti villa camp in the ref association has hit a new low. For Mike Riley to come out and say there have only been 4 mistakes with VAR and obvious errors and Jack's 'dive' to not be one of them is nothing short of scandalous.

Hi Guys, the way i understand it is that VAR could not get involved in this decision as the referee had stopped play.

If he hadnt, the goal would have stood after VAR review.

I think what this shows is that play needs to be continued beyond a possible VAR intervention rather than the referee just stopping the game. However, how can this by appropriately implemented?

They are making up nonsense as they go to protect the incompetence of their officials. The goal would not have stood, but you should have had a free kick or possibly a penalty, depending on where it was decided the offence took place.}

Simply put, they are in a position to say 'you got it wrong' and should do. Yes, the ref was a Wally and shouldn't have whistled when he did but the VAR could at least confirm which way the infringement actually occurred ie foul or dive.
I get that they don't want to negate the position of the ref by overruling everything but if you're going to implement it, use it properly.
Get the senior refs in there who don't have the legs anymore and have them properly advise on what the call should be. 2 birds with one stone, VAR does its job and younger refs get effective on the job training.

{Ed001's Note - I have also been saying that they should get older refs in there. But one thing that made me laugh is they have Lee Probert unavailable to referee due to a bad back and they also say he is not fit enough to be in the VAR studio! Surely he could still do that?}

I'd put Dermot in there, his Ref Watch feature on Sky Sports is a good read. His analysis shows that while he's sympathetic to what the ref can see in real time he will still call them out on it.

{Ed001's Note - any of the retired ones. They might have missed things on the pitch, but that is in real time, with a video to watch they should be able to spot things.}
