Looks like we are preparing a second bid for Emile Smith-Rowe, I really can't see this one happening. We took their main summer target, if we were to take one of their rising stars, whom is already a regular part of their first team it would be their owners openly admitting they are happy for the club to continue their decline.

The fact we have bid and are planning a second bid tells me the players agent had suggested there is interest and therefore reason to do so. This could either be genuine, or the agent looking to show Arsenal there's genuine interest elsewhere so they can get a better deal.

Either way I hope we don't waste too much time on this, we should always strive to get the best deal but there's a fine line between the benefit of getting the best deal and wasting time and missing out on other targets.

Exciting times to be a Villa fan!

It might depend on the money situation at Arsenal. If they want players like Aouar, and Ben White for instance, they might be more tempted to offload Smith- Rowe to help fund those deals. It would be great if we could get him but Alvarez is probably more realistic. A front 4 of Grealish, Buendia, Alvarez and Watkins would be as equally mouth watering.

Mouth watering agreed, but we would need two very effective midfielders behind them to avoid being overrun. I don’t think we have that pair at the moment.

One of the reasons why Grealish was switched to the left from no. 10 role was due to the flimsy midfield we had as a result. Add to which, he rarely runs on beyond the centre forward without the ball. Buendia is not too dissimilar, although tends to thread the ball through or work on sharp one-twos with the front man.

I think it would be Smith Rowe, or Alvarez, rather than both. If we signed both all of a sudden we have Grealish, Buendia, ESR and Alvarez all fighting for the positions behind Watkins. Grealish is more or less guaranteed to start, with the other three fighting for the other two spots, I can’t see any of them signing on the basis there a good chance they’ll be spending a portion of the season on the bench.

Add into that Traore, El Ghazi and Chukky, and we’ve got far too many players for those positions😂 I think Trez will be sold once fully fit.

Personally, I’d sooner see us focus on a defensive midfielder to play behind these lads, protect the back four and allow the other to do whatever they want.

I think sadly that the ESR business is all designed to secure him a better deal at Arsenal, I think other players such as Willock, Guendouzi, Elneny and Maitland Niles are the ones likely to be sacrificed to secure additional funds.

Whilst it is good to be linked with all these progressive attacking players I would like to see us associated with that beast of a defensive midfielder that I think will really take us to the next level. I know there are noises around Berge but they don’t sound that likely if I am honest so I would like our next move to be in that space to be honest.

Talking of defensive midfielders, Romeu of Southampton is the latest player that we’ve apparently registered an interest in. Any thoughts on this one guys?

On the face of it, his age goes against the policy at the minute, but with us losing our 3 oldest players, some experience in the actual starting X11 and not the bench (Young) might be what we need.

I was banging on about Romeu a few months back. one of the best defensive midfielders in the league in my opinion. strong, aggressive and technically sound. might be getting on a bit but if we can get him for a decent price he'd definitely be worth it. Straight into our first 11 and will help us bridge the gap to the teams above us.
