Anyone who missed todays game on villa tv, can catch up the highlights if you search :villa v rennes highlights on YouTube. The coverage is totally disjointed and i watched the whole game live and didn't see a lot of difference, judge for yourselves. We can't pass our way out of a high press, so expect everyone to use these tactics against us. Our passing again was poor and we definitely need to work on ollies touch and sharpness he was again very poor. Why on earh we are pushing to extend Luiz contract beggars belief, he was again poor. The positive for me was our defensive shape our new signings look as though we can withstand periods of attack, which we can expect from the off. I genuinely hope we get at least one quality striker otherwise we are going to struggle to score enough goals to win games.

Did I miss something or did we not win 2-1? Carlos was a stand-out and Bailey scored again. Rennes are a very good side, finishing 4th in Ligue 1 behind PSG, Marseilles and Monaco and are in the Europa League. Not a bad days work I'd say.

Dave you let yourself down,by saying the defence looked good HaHa .Agree some of the passing was bad,but also some good stuff in there .Ollie showed once again,he’s not an instinctive striker, don’t know if it’s because he’s naturally a winger .On the other hand he works hard and shows a lot of strength chasing the ball down .
Once again Tim looked the part when he came on,he certainly grown into a proper unit .Kamara looks class, Konsa well and Carlos is an utter beast .Perhaps I’m a glass half full man,but I think there are more positives than negatives .

Good result but only really started to gain control when they made subs.
Even though we've made signings to work towards being a team that can hold onto the ball, I think yesterday showed we're still not at a point we can play out from the back consistently.

RK, bang on mate, its going to be an issue.

That’s why a quality defensive midfielder who can not only hold on to the ball in tight positions but can link the play to the more forward thinking midfielders is essential in my view along with an out and out goal scorer. Although our transfer business to date has been good we really missed an opportunity with Bissouma in my opinion.

Kamara was signed as that player but it takes more than one player to move it around and unfortunately he also had a bit of a bad game until he went to CB.
Martinez is a bit slow and indecisive with the ball at his feet and Mcginn and Luiz aren't great at positioning themselves in the gaps or finding their man when in them.
Until the team has further evolved over the next couple of years the likes of Watkins, Mcginn and Bailey mean we are still more suited to spreading the play quickly.
I also notice that with Coutinho we still overload the left like we did with Jack. It's predictable and leaves the other side exposed.

I think Gerrard is going to play with 2 holding midfielders Kamara is definitely one but I don’t think playing either Luiz or McGinn as the other holding player is ideal both prefer to play further forward and Nakamba isn’t the answer either as his distribution is shocking, that’s why if we are going to play with two holders then we need to sign another one and quick.

If that is what he wants then I agree but from what I've seen I'm not so sure.
Our interest in other DMs seemed to die off after we announced Kamara, Sangare rumours are likely rehashes from last year.
I get the feeling he wants the 2 8s to be a little deeper so the 10s can get closer to the striker.
I think he's hoping there is a balance to be struck between Mcginns combativeness and inventiveness with Dougs composure. Ramsey as a ball carrier against more defensive teams.
If Luiz doesn't start to affect games more though then I see Sanson and Tim starting to get some game time.

It'll be Luiz, Kamara, McGinn against Bournemouth - For now, that's our best Midfield but every time I watch Iroegbunam I'm more impressed by him, physically strong, defensively sound, great awareness and composure - He looks such a quality player in the making. I'm convinced that if we do go into the market for a Midfielder it'll be a 30+ year old who can make an immediate impact but won't derail Iroegbunam's long term development. Wijnaldum looks like he is off to Roma so won't be him but that type of signing!
