Whilst I love all this transfer speculation and the names we are linked with, the salaries some of these guys are on are huge, given the tightening financial regulations that will be coming into force over the next couple of years does anyone have any concerns around how we are going to afford all this spending without falling foul of the regs?

Agree0 Disagree0

I think the owners have it under control mate, they are shrewd enough to not get us in trouble and ruin their investment imo

Agree Whack, plus I think we'll do the majority of our business early and the remainder of the window will be spent off loading players to balance the books.

I hope your right guys but the likes of Targett and Luiz are on £50 to £60 k a week and Kamara is already signed on £150k Tarkowski if we sign him is asking for £120 k and similar amounts will be being asked for by other transfer targets. As well as having to find the cash I wonder what the effect will be on dressing room harmony

I think the £100k from Jack has helped FFP. It will be the combination of fees and wages that has a ceiling, and the gates post-covid will help. Tarkowski on a free, Coutinho on a free, all helps.

As far as dressing room harmony goes, it fees like we are entering a new era. Players step up or get replaced, so do it on the pitch and you get a better contract will be the message.

It will be interesting to see how it pans out at the start of next season.

This season has demonstrated that a lot of the current squad are not good enough to take us to the next level. I am really hoping that we start next season with two new midfielders, two centre backs, a winger and centre forward. I wouldn’t be that sad to see the back of any of the players signed in the Bruce and Smith eras with the exception of Cash, Konsa and Martinez. Watkins and McGinn are the uncertainties for me. As Watkins demonstrated against City; he often lacks the touch and composure of a too striker. As for McGinn he is clearly not suited to the role he has played most this season. He is a fan favourite but needs to be given a chance higher up the pitch.

Coutinho was £17mill, not free.
While we needed a couple of experienced heads around the place I hope we don't go down the MON route of throwing loads of money at too many people with very little sell on if any.
Coutinho and Carlos will be over £40mill in transfer fees and some hefty wages and both are 29/30. Ings and Digne are also both an age where if or when we sell they will have dropped in value.
I hope Gerrard in his demand for success hasn't fully abandoned the clubs strategy of improving player values. Maybe the idea is that Kamara alone covers that by coming in on a free.

Apart from maginn and Martinez none of those players have increased in value by significant amount.

Whilst I have to agree with you RK with what you’ve said. The only thing I would say to counter it a little bit is that the quality of player we are adding to the squad at the very least now our youngsters are learning from and being around top quality. i'd rather our young defenders having Carlos to aspire to than mings and Coutinho over El Ghazi etc.

However all of SGs business besides Bouba seems to have broken the usual tinder 25 years model we seemingly had before.
That said your final point also does have to be considered. If we can need up selling BK for Grealish like money in a few seasons then you’d say it all balances out. Hopefully the days of selling our best are now behind us though!

Whack, I'd argue Konsa and Cash are both £15-20mill up, Watkins about £10mill and Luiz £10-15mill. That's a good £50mill profit right there. The 2 you mentioned take it up to £100-125m easy I reckon.

26 May 2022 22:08:46
I agree some of them have risen, cash for sure he’s had 2 good seasons, I think we paid 12 million for konsa so 15-20 million increase in value brings him up to possibly 32 million, absolutely not a sniff of it, nobody would pay it right now, he’s had a terrible season, plus prone to getting sent off, hence why we need new center backs, Watkins cost us almost 30 million and he’s getting slated here most weeks for his finishing, he’s not a 40 million striker, lucky if we broke even on him right now. traore I reckon we will lose 8-10 million on him, we might get 25 for Doug but that’s a stretch, I know he plays deep and not preferred position but the guy can’t hit a dead ball to save his life, his frees and corners are awful. you only have to look at the league table to know we are closer to s 20 million average than a 40. these players are not that good, we finished barely above the drop zone and all the teams below us were terrible all season, they are bang average at best with a few quality guys in the mix. sanson is another we will be lucky to break even on. Terry was a big loss to us this season, hopefully Carlos experience will make up for it in part.

Konsa is closer to the 15 mill, his age coupled with his experience means 27-30m is easily his market value.
Tammy went for 40 last year after not even playing football for months. No way Ollie is less than 38-40m which is the number already being quoted as the minimum in the Arsenal and West Ham stories.
If anyone buys Doug it will be 25-30. Most of us think he's overrated but he's exactly the type of number 6 that a lot of Spanish and Italian sides look for.

27 May 2022 09:40:18
We were quoted 40+ million for Carlos, bought for 26. Tammy was the highest scoring English forward in Europe last season and Ollie can’t even make the bench for England, I like him but he’s not going to do much more than stop a team getting relegated. Doug is entering his final year so that’s also bringing down his price, it’s just opinions mate but you can’t slate players all year then be surprised when they are not worth huge amounts, pay for what you get and these guys are all average.

27 May 2022 10:05:15
From what I saw Carlos was touted at 35m Euros and we got him for 30 plus add ons.
Yes, Tammy did that this season but it was in Italy and his price tag was before he did that.
A lot of average young players cost 25-35m now so I don't think I'm overselling the prices.
