That was absolutely a shocking performance, we have taken so many steps backwards it's unbelievable I'm not going to single anybody out it was a hole team of bad performance, Gérard needs to get chambers into that back line ASAP and maybe now us supporters will realise that luiz is best we have in the holding role until marvellous gets back

I think we just need to get to the end of the season and allow Gerrard to put his own stamp on the squad, if rumours are to be believed as many as 10 to 15 players are likely to be on there way so the squad will look fundamentally different to what it does now.

Lord I understand that but it's like 3 steps forward and 2 steps backwards how is it that Deano was able to get this bunch playing maybe no playing well week in week out but most weeks we believed we had a chance, I think last season we took points of the top 6 clubs bar city
At some point the owners are going to stop spending I think I read yesterday they have spent 330 million on transfers that's a lot of money for any club to struggle to get into the top 10
I know some here feel it was the right thing to do in sacking Smith and some feel it was way to early I'm still undecided on that one myself, but what I do know is our defense is a shambles and that down to the loss of Terry, and I'm wondering did we miss a trick or was he even interviewed for the job
Konsa is half the player he was last season confidence is shoot, Mings over confident spit out the gum roll your sleeves up and wake, Cash the only one that can hold his head up puts in a shift and gives everything, mcginn looked today as if he needs a rest and he has for a while, but we know he is a better player further up the pitch so why won't we play him there couthino wasn't at the races at all should have came off at half time, Gérard needs to make the hard decisions and not be afraid to drop certain players no matter who they are

IV I didn’t see the game today so I can’t comment on the performance but I think for the last 2 years we have been far to easy to play through in the middle of the park and it’s no surprise that we are being linked with a number of high quality defensive midfielders like Phillips, Bissouma and Kamare (the one from Marseille not Rangers!). If we sign Coutinho, at least 1 if not 2 of the above, a back up centre half, a quality centre forward, plus a couple of squad players (left back and a wide man) you will see a totally different team, and given the number of departures that will take place in the summer together with the transfer kitty Gerrard is supposedly being given that should not be beyond us to fill those positions and if we do owe have every reason to be hopeful for next year.

100% agree Ings - Personally I think we need 2 midfielders in the summer, our side is very unbalanced and without Marvelous our defence is very exposed - You could put prime McGrath and Maldini in there and we'd still ship goals. I've mentioned it before on this site, but as fans we really are a fickle bunch, "Gerrard has been found out", "We were better under Smith", win 3 games in a row and it's "I'm glad I was wrong, Gerrard can take us to the next level"! The reality is Villa are a mid table side, we will win some and we will lose some, and for those who feel we don't have a mid table squad ask yourself how many of our team get in the West Ham 11, or Leicester, or Wolves nevermind mind the big Clubs like Spurs or Arsenal. We have a mid table squad and until that is addressed we will have runs of mediocrity but we will also have periods where we win games. This summer is absolutely massive, this is where we add quality, not quantity - Then we can judge Gerrard.

BK i couldn't agree more, we are where we are with mid table mediocrity, because that's the level of players we have. If we get decent offers for the majority of our players we should sell, with the caveat that what we replace them with must be better and proven. The likes of Bailey, Traore, Trezeguet Elghazi should not be the type of players we go anywhere near. Finally Coutinho is not the answer, four teams have already made the decision he is not for them, stay clear and use his wage money wisely.

I think there is the makings of a very good side there Cafu, like you put Rice and Soucek in the Villa midfield and we are a complety different animal - I don't think we need wholesale changes but I do think we need 2 midfielders, I see John Perry has said we are interested in Phillips AND Bissoma today, now those signings would bring us to the next level - Also, as much as I love Watkins I think if we can add a top drawer striker (I thought that was Ings if I'm honest) to the mix as well then Europe is very realistic next season, in fact it's probably the minimum we should expect from Gerrard if he brings Coutinho, Phillips, Bissoma and a top striker in. Not sure what stikers we could attract that would be better than the 2 we have though?

03 Apr 2022 17:29:51
If Leeds don’t get relegated I don’t see Phillips going anywhere, I think Bissouma is a realistic target, as is Kamara at Marseille and I also think Ndidi at Leicester might be worth a punt. I absolutely agree re Watkins i think he needs someone to really push him, in terms of candidates to fill that role, I really like the look of Patrick Shick at Bayer Leverkusen but I am not sure they would be looking to sell, however as Roma are interested in Douglas Luiz how about us offering him and say £30 million for Tammy Abraham?

I also see we are allegedly interested in Saint Maximin now that would be a signing

Agree Ings, I don't see us getting Philips, he's the calibre of player we néed to target though along with Bissoma - A trio of Phillips (or a Philips-esque player), Bissoma and McGinn further forward would really address some of our issues at both ends of the park. I really like the Tammy suggestion, he's exactly the type of player we need, I love Ollie but he's not a natural goal scorer and that's what we need to make the jump to the next level. I'm torn on ASM, on his day he's the most terrifying player in the league and could run riot against any defence but I wonder is he a little too inconsistent to warrent the cost? Plus for me Coutinho is our luxury player, I think we need to build around him, if we add another we may see some of the same issues reappear. Big, big, summer ahead, need to get it right.

04 Apr 2022 11:41:26
BK if we sign Phillips, Bissouma and Coutinho I am not sure how we fit those three with McGinn playing further forward particularly if we play the 4 3 3 system Gerrard seems to favour

04 Apr 2022 14:34:32
Ings, I think we'd probably go back to a similar formation from a few weeks ago when we played Ings and Watkins together up top. Something like.

----Phillips----

-Bissoma, McGinn-

----Coutinho----

If we are signing Coutinho then the priority HAS to be to get the best out of him every game, our current midfielder doesn't lend itself to that, that's why I feel we will look at 2 midfielders (a high energy 8 and a top drawer 6).

04 Apr 2022 17:54:06
I hope you are right BK, I remember a couple of Rangers fans coming on here when Gerrard was appointed saying saying he was a bit one dimensional when it came to formations and tactics and tended to be wedded to 4 3 3, if that’s the case then I don’t think the formation with 2 holding midfielders and trying to accommodate Coutinho and McGinn in forward positions would work.
