Not a very enjoyable watch, lots for Stevie G to contemplate. Poor passing and very little goal threat. Be interesting to see who he brings in. Centre back and left back guaranteed and those who will not feature in the new year, Traore, Trez, Elghazi Hause and I think Targetts days are also numbered as a starter. Buendia looks promising. I thought we didn't play to Mcginns strengths and we really missed ollie. Lots of things for Stevie G to ponder. A couple of interesting games coming up let's see how we bounce back.

Ramsey needs time but he was the root of all our problems today for me. At times he was too timid like when he spent 30 seconds constantly giving it back to buendia who was trying to lay it off to him to run past him. He was then also too selfish when he got near the box and got crowded out. He also can't defend for toffee, pointless yellow card and then his chip pass and not tracking his man led to their first goal.
Ings is a very good player but doesn't really fit our system, we obviously missed Watkins today and while Hause did a job I still think we missed Mings presence and organisation.

Agreed on all of the above. How Traore lasted so long before being taken off is beyond me, it was like playing with 10 men at times.and my heart sank when Trezeguet came on. Hopefully a couple of signings to bring the quality up in Jan.and a few back from injury and we can have a strong finish to the season. As mentioned in previous posts though, we're a mid table team at the moment and so we're going to be inconsistent.
Anyone else find it strange when Gérard said he wasn't in a position to explain why Watkins wasn't available? Presumably it's a positive covid test but why not just say so!?

I thought Doug was awful, several corners wasted with him pointlessly fouling the keeper when we really needed a goal, he’s meant to be creative but I don’t see him creating much, he’s not effective as a DM so what’s his role in the team, I’d like to see him sold for a tidy sum and replace with a quality CM, we need another winger, Bert is hopeless 90% of the time and for all trez effort I don’t think he’s good enough to help us up the table

Just to clarify, agreed on all of the above with reference to the first post.
I didn't see Ramsey as being the root of all our problems. Much bigger issues than his performance for me.

OK DBS, so you and Scott are going to go back to Targett again who did everything right other than the end product at the top end of the pitch. Its an area he needs to improve but it's not his priority. Ramsey was objectively the joint worst player with Traore based on what their jobs were, Traore isn't match fit though.
Doug wasn't great and Traore clearly wasn't up to speed but other than drawing a couple of fouls Ramsey didn't do a lot and Brentford only ever looked like being able to attack down his side because he's anonymous defensively.
After the way Sanson played against Chelsea it was extremely harsh to drop him and in my opinion his aggression and directness would have helped put Brentford to the sword in that first half.

SG rigid 433 is the problem. same happens at rangers.not playing to individual players strengths.

Hi RK - I wasn't really debating that Ramsey wasn't great today and certainly not drawing any conclusions from one-off performances, just suggesting that he is the least of our problems, as is Mings which was debated on here a week or so ago. Those two would be in demand if they were ever put up for transfer, which is more than can be said for plenty of others. So my point is just that if we have aspirations of developing into genuine top six contenders, It's players like Trezeguet, Targett, Traore who should be worried first, not others that have been called out.
As for Ramsey's performance today, it wasn't up there with recent performances but he still at least tried to make things happen and still dominated his opponent for large parts of the game. More than can be said for others, hence my disagreement that he was the root of all our problems.

We'll agree to disagree on Ramsey today.
This tagliafico if we get him might work out to be a good pick for left back but otherwise I'm still backing Targett as for me he has been more consistent than Cash on the other side going all the way back to the start of last season.
A DM due to no Nakamba is probably the priority although I think Sanson with Doug and JM is solid enough as they all get stuck in.
Another Wide Forward or number 10 is the necessary one for me. Gerrard clearly doesn't want to play Anwar and Bailey is always injured. Traore lacks pace and is one footed and Trez has no composure meaning they can't sustain the push we need.

I agree rk, def mid is a priority and I have said many times I would break the bank for Bissouma he is real quality and whilst some of the big boys were looking a while ago it seems to have gone quiet on that front so we might have a chance who knows. In terms of a left back I guess it depends if you want someone to go straight into the first eleven or to genuinely challenge Targett If it’s the latter then I would be inclined to go for the lad Hickey at Bologna he’s only 19 but can play left back or left midfield and has scored something like 5 goals in 20 appearances fits in with what seems to be the recruitment profile we have been following for the last few windows. In terms of other signings I would really like Saint Maximin but we have no chance of landing him so I would enquire about Lingard his contract is up in the summer if you could land him for £10 million that would be a bargain I might also try something similar for Origi as again his contract is up in the summer and I think if you could land him there’s a far better chance of Origi and Watkins forming a partnership than Watkins and Ings unfortunately as I do like Ings but it just doesn’t work with him and Watkins. Interestingly enough I have a mate who is a Rangers fan and the one player he really doesn’t want to lose to us isn’t Kent or Kamara but the right back Patterson who he thinks is real quality and will ultimately play for one of the big six.

02 Jan 2022 23:05:34
Patterson is going to Everton by the looks of it Lord.
Lingard had a good run at West Ham but would come with big wages and he'd play off the side whereas his best form came playing centrally.
Hickey being a few years younger than Targett is a good option but I'm sceptical we get him as cheap as the pundits are touting. I reckon it's a good £10-15mill to land someone who will probably be better than Targett going forwards but weaken the defence slightly at the same time. Targett isn't old enough yet to have someone that costs a lot waiting for their chance so it's either fairly cheap experienced cover/rotation or a better replacement if you're going to spend. Tagliofico is the touted option for spending, I'd consider Ben Davies if wanting experienced cover with him struggling for game time.
