So we are apparently going to test the water with 15million bid for McNeil from Burnley. I can see them wanting double that so i would say a deal around 22-28 mill may get it done and dusted. I hope this can be sorted as I think he would give us some much needed balance in the team and would certainly help us going forward. My opinion obviously what are other view to this.

Agree0 Disagree0

Really? Where'd you hear that Rob? I'd love McNeil, always impressed me when I watched Burnley.

07 May 2021 11:13:39
Just been reading it online. It was that football insider, that’s why I was a bit amazed by the 15 million pound offer. As I said can easily see it nearly 20 mill plus for him.

Young English winger playing regularly in the premier league, add in Burnley owners previous transfer dealing when rejecting offers/ selling players, it will be 30 million plus at a minimum, but I’d guess around 40 million.

That would be without knowing their financial state following CV, which could make a big difference.

I have to say I am not McNeill’s biggest fan to be honest, if you look at his assists this year Traore has more, in terms of goals he has got the same number as Konsa, I think we can do better.

07 May 2021 11:45:00
Chris, I agree in terms of fee and that’s one of the reasons why I think we can do better even if it means paying a bit more.

07 May 2021 13:52:42
Who would you like to see then villajohn?

07 May 2021 14:59:44
Sarr from Watford for me, to play right wing though, keep Grealish on the left.

07 May 2021 16:37:12
He’s a decent player agree Chris I think though Deano has the plan to bring Tammy in as the main centre forward, move Ollie to the right hand side and have jack as the number 10 with the free role to go all over and then have McNeil to the left if we was to land him.

07 May 2021 16:55:08
If we are talking left wingers then my ideal would be Saint Maximin, if we can’t land him either Harrison or Lookman. But I am not sure why we are looking at two wide players to be honest because if we get two and move Jack inside then I think we have to sacrifice either Luiz or McGinn because I don’t think the defensive axis of Luiz and McGinn works, so for me I would rather we keep Jack wide left, move McGinn into a more advanced position similar to where he plays when he turns out for Scotland, and then sign a wide right midfielder Sarr, Buendia, or Brooks would be my preference and follow that up with signing a quality defensive midfielder preferably Bissouma or Berge.

07 May 2021 17:07:36
Agree John, Grealish seems more effective on the left. Had his best season ever this year being out there, just needs quality players on form who can help him out, which at the start of the season he had.

I’d like to sign Tammy but there’s something about bringing him in a slinging Watkins out wide that doesn’t sit right. Watkins has had a brilliant first season in the prem, worked tirelessly for the team, throwing him out wide to accommodate someone else it a bit of a kick in the teeth. If a decent right winger was available I’d sooner we go for them.

07 May 2021 18:57:32
That`s a great point chris, and I wonder what effect that would have on Watkins.
But I do think that is probably the intention, that also throws a doubt over the long term prospects of Wesley?

07 May 2021 23:25:13
Good point Dave, If we are going to move Watkins outside, and bring in a striker, I think that would put Wesley at number two to play as striker, so still fighting for his position. Worth noting aswell Wesley didn’t always play down the middle for his previous club, he was in off the right from most the highlights, not a winger, but definitely off center.

I don’t think Watkins would be nearly as effective as a winger, I don’t think he’s got that trick in him that you need as a winger but I guess we won’t know until we see it.

07 May 2021 23:31:05
I think we need to get away from the mentality of Signing X replaces Player Y lads. Watkins for me is outstanding, he should be the second name on the team sheet after Jack and will 100% start next season as our number 1 striker - That being said, would I like to have options up front off the bench and would I like to have serious competition for Watkins to inspire better performances, absolutely.

Signing Tammy does not mean Watkins will all of a sudden be demoted to the wing, instead I see that as genuine competition for places which is only good for Aston Villa. You scrape away beyond our first 11 and there really isn't a huge amount of depth lads, if you add the Tammys, the Buendia's, the McNeil's of the world however suddenly our squad starts to look very strong. What an amazing time this is when we worry about signing a brilliant striker like Tammy because it may impact our current brilliant striker Watkins :-)

08 May 2021 09:24:55
BK, whilst I agree in principle with what you are saying in terms of having competition for places, if you think Tammy will swap the Chelsea bench for no guarantees that he will be the first choice no 9 then with all due respect you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

08 May 2021 11:06:00
BK I agree totally. Smith surely has no plans to move Ollie wide. It makes no sense. He has arguably been our player of the season this year along with Emi (Jack may be the best player, but he’s missed too many games) . Ollie leading the line has changed and improved the way we play. stretching the play and getting us playing further up the pitch. I’m fairly sure we won’t be signing Tammy, as it’d mean changing the entire system to accommodate him, and be a backwards step imo. That’s not to say he’s not a great player, or that £40m is too much, or that I’m not grateful for all he did. Just don’t see it happening.

In terms of McNeil. I agree with John. his number really don’t stack up. One of his goals was that freak cross against us too! I think he’s talented, but right now I’m not sure how much of an upgrade he is. He’s also a left-footed left-winger, and we typically utilise inverted wingers so again - like Tammy - not sure how well he fits the system. Also think the £15m price is ridiculous; I’m sure they’ve said before he’d cost £35-40m, they’re not going down and he’s not long signed a contract. There’s better out there for the money.

08 May 2021 11:39:34
As John has said, would Tammy swap a champions league bench for a premier league one?

08 May 2021 13:06:54
In reply to all of the above about Tammy, fair point. My crystal ball is telling me that Brentford won’t get promoted and Toney will end up on our bench fighting for the No9 spot (along with Wesley and maybe Barry or Davis if 1 of them doesn’t go out on loan) Defensive mid is where I’d spend big, my choices I’ve posted numerous times, to free up McGinn to be pushed forward. A left footed winger as competition and replacements for any outgoing then job done.

UTV.

Chris and John, I appreciate your point but it's not swapping one bench for another - Tammy, like any player worth his salt, will back himself to get into Villa's 11 and that competition between 2 very good strikers can only benefit the club. Plus it gives us options, yes we could play Watkins left occasionally, we could play 2 up top occassionally, having 2 top quality strikers at the club is good news, it's a very good headache for Dean Smith to have.

It's going to be an interesting summer, perhaps we won't go for an out and out striker like Tammy and spend big on a wide player and a 10, either way it's an exciting period to be a Villa fan, the team needs depth and the first team some surgery and I'm sure that will be addressed over the summer / January. UTV.

BK on that basis why wouldn’t he back himself to displace Werner and Haaland if he comes in. The difference with coming to us is you have two forwards not only competing at club level but potentially at international level I can’t see Tammy buying into that. I have to say I am more in Allyp’s space ie spend big on a defensive midfielder and someone wide and move McGinn forward, where I would differ from Allyp is if I was going for a centre forward I would want a big old fashioned beast who holds the ball up good in the air and bring other players in that in addition would also give us a plan b option if things are going to plan and for that reason I would go with Mitrovic.

08 May 2021 17:20:56
I'm sure he backs himself to displace Werner John but the reality is the manager doesn't fancy him, for whatever reason. He clearly needs a fresh start and I'd love it to be at Villa!

08 May 2021 19:58:56
Well BK as I said I think we will know soon enough, if we sign two upgrades in wide positions then I don’t see a big money striker being signed, particularly with Wesley coming back to fitness.
