Why is it with our club, we only seem to be able to loan players out.
And if we do sell, 90% of the time it is for a loss.
I know things are slowly changing, and we are trying to amend this problem, but it still looks to be happening in our club, ie Guilbert.
We need to be taking every opportunity to move unwanted players out permanently, and free up some space, and generate some cash.

I agree with that sentiment Dave. Re Guilbert, I really like him as a player, 100% commitment whenever he plays, if he's had a fallout with Deano, fair enough, try and get him off the books and get as much as we can for him. What I'm hoping tho is that with Elmo coming to the end of his contract, he sees Guilbert as 2nd choice but is happy with Elmo providing cover for Cash whilst Guilbert gets regular playing time elsewhere and will be ready next season to push Cash for that starting berth rather than sitting on our bench. Also his bench space could be taken up by one of the promising youngsters, ditto Taylor's place and possibly Hourihane or Nakamba.

I don’t think if we sold Guilbert we would make a loss, purely for the fact we didn’t pay a lot for him. If he does go out on loan though, and he does well, we could get more in 6 months time.

This could be a case of Guilbert wanting the loan move Dave.
He’s 26, coming up to his peak and not getting a look in.
I wouldn’t blame him for wanting to try and get regular football elsewhere.
If he goes out and does well, I think we’ll get back what we paid for him in the Summer transfer window, whereas if he stays and is hardly used, he may not have very much appeal. He is a player who gives 100% and may do well out on loan. I feel a bit sorry for him because he did ok last season, but Matty Cash is clearly better, and Elmo offers more experience. At the end of the day we didn’t pay big bucks for him and should hopefully, ultimately get back what we paid for him.
Looking ahead to next season for right back cover for Cash, it’s unlikely that Elmo will get an extension to his contract and will probably depart. However, Kaine Kessler has been very impressive for the u23’s and it wouldn’t surprise me if he is given the task of being Cash’s back up.
Of course, if Guilbert does exceptionally well, they could even bring him back.

Dave if I am honest I think it’s because our approach to transfers up until very recently appears to have been haphazard at best with no real strategy behind it and we have had some spectacular own goals McCormack and Kalinic to name but two however I think our approach now means that will no longer be the case and if we were to sell any of Mc Ginn, Luiz, Mings, Konsa, I think we would make significant returns on our outlay. In the transfer stakes it’s you win some you lose some.

It's not just us now Dave, even the big boys are stuck with loans as the only option. Funds on the continent have dried up so only the big hitters can afford to buy.
No Prem club were interested so would have been Championship or European League meaning our only option was to loan.
Unfortunately, if you're not open to selling a first team player then you probably won't get a transfer fee these days.

I think it’s just a means to get his wages off the bill until the summer when Elmo go’s makes perfect sense to have him playing regularly until we need him, will make even more sense if there’s a recall clause in it if we lose a player to injury.

Thank you guys, some good analogies, I like Guilbert and would like him to establish a genuine battle for the number 2 slot.
Problem being if Deano offers Elmo some sort of sweetener to say put, if that were to happen, Guilbert would fester for another season.

How long is left of Freddie’s contract? I couldn’t see dean keeping Elmo he don’t get enough game time either way, I seen a suggestion further up that I liked about having Freddie and matty playing on the same side when we need that bit more protection, like in the Leeds game I think we would of benefited majorly having those 2 on the pitch, both can run also meaning they could easily swap back and forth between RB and RMF.
