Trying not to get too carried away, however given our lack of success over the last decade or so it's hard not to. So with that in mind let's assume we qualify for Europe and indulge in a little fantasy football. Emery has confirmed he wants two quality players for every position here's my attempt to achieve that.

In coming up with this list I have tried to balance our spend, keep it in manageable proportions and look to bring in some quality free transfers as well as spending big on one or two key players.

Ins. Outs.
Tierney (£35 million). Bailey. (£15 million)
Torres (£45 million). Digne. (£15 million)
Henderson (£25 million) Sanson (£10 million)
Goncalves (£70 million). Dendoncker (£12 mill)
Tielemans (Free). Chambers (£5 million)
Thuram (Free). Nakamba (£5 million)
Dembele (Free). Davis. (£5 million)
Philogene. (£5 million)
Coutinho (£10 million)
Olsen (£2 million)
Wesley. (Free)

We could achieve that little lot spending less than £100 million and our match day squad could look something like this

Martinez
Cash Torres Carlos Tierney
Kamara Tielemans
McGinn Buendia
Watkins Thuram

Subs
Henderson
Mings
Moreno
Luiz
Traore
Duran
Young
Ramsey J

I think a squad like this would be really capable of challenging for major honours on all fronts. The summer window will lead to exciting times at Villa next season me thinks

Hi Lotm,

Great to fantasize, of course, and I like the look of some of those. Thing is it is a bit disrespectful to some of those playing very well at the moment, such as Mings, Moreno, Konsa and I don't think Dougie has done too much wrong either. So bringing them in would mean they get their chance on squad rotation? The future is definitely bright though.

Your right 56 and as we all know it is a squad game like you I like Dougie but I think Tielemans brings a little bit more to the table in terms of goals Howe if we are going to compete potentially in 4 competitions we are definitely going to need a big squad.

20 Apr 2023 13:39:29
I agree about Tielemans goal threat. Does he play deep at Leicester? I always think Dougie could get more goals if he was a bit more ambitious. Anyway, I am expecting significant upgrades in the summer, and we should be a team to be reckoned with next year.

Tielemans can play a multitude of positions across the middle of the park but he seems better when playing deeper. He plays the more holding role when playing for Belgium as De Bruyne has the attacking role nailed down.

Love the suggestions bar Tierney, Moreno has been fantastic since his arrival - If Digne leaves then we need back up / competition but I personally wouldn't be addressing that area unless we need to. I wonder will we go big on a CB given how well Konsa and Mings are playing? I'd love Torres though!

agree with lord apart from lb moreno is quality, also if we got dumfries from inter milan he's an upgrade on cash

Again I am probably in the minority but whilst I like Moreno in an offensive sense I am not really convinced by him defensively. What little threat Newcastle posed came down our left hand side and it was the same against Chelsea. I will be really interested to see in our remaining games whether or not the opposition target that area as our potential weak spot. That’s why I think Tierney is an upgrade and for me would start.

With regards Torres the reason I suggested him is if Emery wants 2 quality players for every position we only have one centre back in Konsa to cover Carlos and Mings,

20 Apr 2023 20:17:52
We've conceded 1 goal from open play in 8 games though LotM, I take your point that teams may target the left side but I think it's because he is so far forward rather than his defensive frailties and we are now set up to cover his attacking. For me he's been outstanding since he arrived, if Digne leaves then of course we need to reinforce but I'd be surprised if it's a Tierny-esque signing, he is very good though.

We need to be realistic on the level of backup we could have, players in their prime are unlikely to sit on the bench unless that is their level or they are happy to pick up big money for nothing.
Henderson left United to be first choice, won't come to be backup to us.
Mings is one of the top defenders in the league, he will want to play the majority of games.
Konsa might take that role but I still think he's had so many games at this level that he'd rather be a starter at a mid table club.
You haven't included Dembele or Goncalves in your squad so as you've only named 8 subs that leaves Traore missing out completely? That means he leaves also.
2 players for every position doesn't necessarily mean 22+ high end players, 2 or 3 will cover multiple positions.
I'd expect a first 11, 4 for rotation (2 for the 4 midfield spots, 1 for support striker and one for left back), 2 first choice backups at a high level (1 CB, 1 RB) and then another 4-5 will be covered by young or experienced players (1 GK, 1-2 DEF, 1 MID, 1 FWD)

Competing on 4 fronts will potentially mean 60 games if we go into the latter stages of the competitions therefore the players in the squad will have plenty of opportunities to play. You are right re Goncalves an error on my part he would obviously make the starting XI. Re your point about 2 players for every position doesn’t mean high end players for every position I think you’ll find the very top clubs like City, Liverpool and Chelsea actually do have 2 high end players for every position in fact Chelsea’s first team squad exceeds 30 . If we want to compete amongst the best we have to adopt a model to enable us to challenge them in my opinion.

20 Apr 2023 23:44:36
I think we'll sign one player that goes straight into the 11, no questions asked, and if I was a betting man I think that'll be Goncalves - Then I think we sign players who are not in there prime but have potential, the likes of Guendouzi, Lee Kang-In, Facundo Medina (rumoured tonight) etc who have a high ceiling and will cost money but won't absolutely break the bank and demand to start every week. I expect to see more Moreno-esque signings, players who fit Emery's style rather than the "sexy" big names we got under the previous manager.

Not sure if you guys watch The Villa View - Well one of the presenters mentioned an ITK had suggested we had already a deal in place for a striker and it wasn't a massive name but one Emery wanted. They speculated it was Dembele who I think fits the criteria a lot of you suggested - Good player, improves the squad, will accept rotation.

Chelsea are suffering because of their squad and need to cut down.
City pay big wages and most of the players who are not youngsters leave within 12 months of not regularly starting games.
Liverpool I would argue that a chunk of those players are the older experience or youngsters. On their day they can do a job but definitely not top level.
We're talking EL or ECL, not CL. Dembele backup/rotation if CL sure, less than that I'd say no unless one of the usual starters is relatively injury prone.
West Ham tried to do too much and created problems, we need to learn from others mistakes.

21 Apr 2023 08:34:24
It will be interesting to see what Emery does, as we have already got Ings off the wage bill, if we can get Coutinho and Digne off as well that gives us circa £350-400k a week to re invest that’s before you take into account the wages of the other players so I don’t think salary would be an issue for any of the players I listed coming in. If we don’t qualify for European football then I think you maybe right some of those players may turn there nose up at the prospect of joining us but I don’t think most are used to playing CL season in season out so I am not sure that would be too much of a problem but as they say time will tell.

I think the mistake West Ham made was not creating the headroom in the squad for the new players coming in, Emery certainly won’t make that mistake. Re Liverpool the older more experienced players as you put it have only started to show there age this season up until then they have been first class. Also re players versatility up to a point that’s a good thing but rarely do you find a player equally talented in both positions so I would argue that you sacrifice a degree of quality if you ask them to cover both roles. For example Mings has played left back before, but would you feel comfortable him operating regularly as a left back in the PL?
