Looking more and more likely that Carney Chukwuemeka won't be signing a new contract - Disappointing given the fact he's clearly a very talented player but if he backs himself to get more first team football (and let's be honest money) elsewhere then off you go Carney - Best of luck to you.

Bk, it appears to me that Gerrard is showing his strength and determination and sending a message to anyone who isn't committed to cause. Carney looks good but perhaps not as good as he thinks, either way his future is not with us by the look of it.

I agree Carney’s future looks like it’s elsewhere unfortunately, however I do think letting him ply his trade at another club will come back to bite us in the ass. It wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t end up somewhere like Dortmund to replace Bellingham who will be sold on for big money as per the Dortmund business model.

I think Bellingham is a freak though Ings, a generational talent - Carney may turn out to be an exceptional player but for every Bellingham there are 100 talented players who chase fame and fortune and don't live up to the expectation. I hope Carney goes on to have an amazing career but I won't lose sleep over him leaving.

BK I agree with your point re Bellingham he is an exceptional talent that you don’t see that often, my concern is we have this fantastic academy attracting some of the top talent UK wide and beyond but if we are not careful we end up developing talent for the benefit of other clubs and not our own. I am not sure what is the point of recruiting lots of talented kids and yet spending millions on established talent who effectively block that young talent from the first team squad. So for example what is the point of having the likes of Young whose best days are behind him and Hause who let’s be honest is never going to be an established premiership player on the bench above the likes of Chrisene or Chukwuemeka? If we are taking that approach then let’s not bother in recruiting all these kids. I fully accept it’s a balancing act between success now and success in the future I just don’t think we have the balance right at the moment.

That's a very good point Ings, it's certainly unfortunate that the first "star" (or potential star) we have produced from our revamped and very strong academy may be going elsewhere but I think it's fair for the club to expect commitment from these players, especially at 18. Carney, for example, could sign a 5 year deal with Villa now and get a massive move to a European giant before the age of 23 if he's as good as some expect.

I'm not worried about our academy in general, there is a clear line of sight to the first team if they deliver in training, both Carney and Iroegbunam have proven that this season and Jacob Ramsey is a mainstay in our first 11 after breaking into the team last season. It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer, I wouldn't like the club to give unto ridiculous wage demands of 18 year olds, I think that sets a bad precedent, so if Carney leaves he leaves and I wish him well.

I think everyone is overreacting to be honest, it’s only 1 player who hasn’t even proved himself yet, hardly a reason to scrap our academy, every club lose an odd player and most lose several in similar circumstances, look at all the young players we have recruited, what’s gerrard meant to do.? We had 2 young players starting on Saturday against the worst team in the league and although Tim had a decent game we were better when Doug came on he settled things down, Doug has his critics all season including myself but he’s still better than these kids, a good manager plays his best team, the younger guys will get their chance when they are good enough. jack grealish wasn’t bigger than Aston Villa so chuck sure as hell ain’t so if he’s not happy just get rid we don’t need his attitude.

Whack, I don’t think it’s an overreaction if Carney goes he goes the club moves on, however it’s about trying to understand the thinking behind some of the decision the club is making. For example I just don’t understand the approach the club has taken with Carney particularly when a lot of knowledgeable football people are saying that not only is he the best in his position for his age in the UK but possibly in Europe. If the competition at Villa is too hot in the middle of the park at the minute then why not take the approach they have taken with Archer and loan him out? At least that way you can assess him playing what I would describe as ‘mans’ football rather than U23’s all the time. If in the end it’s all about money then I think the club is right to take a stand and not to be held to ransom but if I am honest when we have virtually 2 seasoned professionals for most positions then I don’t see why more of the youngsters aren’t out on loan.

Ings, I'd imagine the club expected to be closer to an agreement with Carney then they are and if that was the case I'm sure he would have a lot more games and starts under his belt. I think this one is just a mess, probably driven by money, and hopefully not consistent with what will happen going forward. The fact both Ramsey and Iroegbunam have commited to long term deals, as well as, a lot of your talented players out on loan gives me a lot of comfort that the academy is moving in the right direction. And who knows, we might see a breakthrough in the summer with Carney and we could be worried about nothing :-)

If he's that good then he'd play. Think he believes his own hype. Pogba Mark 2

Camavinga showing tonight what a truly talented teenage player is! Wow!

04 May 2022 22:41:30
You mean like De Bruyne and Salah at Chelsea?

05 May 2022 10:52:55
Salah really only sparked into life at Liverpool, didn't do much at Roma. Chelsea signed him from Basel. De Bruyne wanted to leave because Jose didn't play him and he thought he should be. And Chelsea got £18m for a relatively untested player. It's not like Chuck is trying to get in a midfield ahead of a Lampard though is it? Did he have much of an impact in the games he did play?

05 May 2022 16:12:07
I’ve not much of CC play outside of his chances with the first team, but I can’t say of those appearances made me think “oh wow” what a star. Where as I thought that after last weeks game seeming Tim for the first time properly? Whether it’s his lack of intent, his attitude or a lack of effort on behalf of the club, there’s clearly something wrong.

Whilst the examples given above are the one end of the scale when it comes to letting talent go, there’s also the other end where players are hyped to the hilt and then do zero with their careers.

I can remember people and pundits alike going crazy about macheda when he scored that wonder girl against us. what’s he done since?

05 May 2022 18:31:12
Bucktooth, Salah scored 29 goals in 65 Seria A games together with 17 assists that’s a pretty good return I don’t think that constitutes not doing much.
